Hauntingly beautiful: a dark faerie tale? Well done, Mia.

Thank you. Hmm, I actually thought of vampires, like in some of the books I have read but it can be fae of course. I think it can be what-ever you like.

hmmmm...wouldn't fae vampires be really chilling?...

you're very welcome, dearheart.

Hmm, fae are usually chilling enough if you think about it.
You never know what's under the glamour.
To be honest I think fae a lot more scary than vampires ever can be.

Oh, yes. They most definitely can be terribly frightening.

Imagining the combination of the two gave me the bad chills for a moment there though....i don't know that i've run across that in pop culture and i hope not to...

Hmm, I think they're some very scary Irish legends like living shadows that eat living things or fae that feat on people's emotions. Well, at least it was that way
in a novel I read once. To be honest the worst things were those living shadows
because there was nothing you could do against then but find some saving light.
I think it was Dublin where the story was placed and to even imagine that a
very big part of the city was forgotten and swallowed by shadows make for some
really bad nightmares, I think.

Wow...am i glad i haven't run across those yet...my nightmares are bad enough as they are...

Yeah, vampires are cute and cuddly against those things. Think of sparkly Twillight vampires. Sorry, better to forget about those fae.

Hmmm....well, I liked the Twilight series well enough until Tim's mom told us the end...which i, frankly, found really disturbing, so that won't work . I guess I'll cuddle my bunny instead.

Not to worry, dearheart.

Oh, okay, I tried reading the first book of Twillight but got quickly bored by
it. It was not that bad as some people, who hate it, say but I've seen better,
but that doesn't mean much these days. I get terribly easily bored by books lately.
It's that bad that even stopped trying to read new books.

Well, I was mostly reading it to be able to share it with his Mom who loves the series. But I simply couldn't do it: not exactly my cup of tea.

I have to be really engaged with the characters and/or story arc to read an entire series...I grew up with Tolkien, so that's the kind of read I like: well-written, moving, with amazing descriptions of the world. Dune's another one.

I also read a lot of non-fiction Nature books.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having difficulty finding intriguing books...

Well, I guess I'm just a little tired of seeing the same kind of plot
being done over and over again (at least where horror novels are concerned)
and somehow really miss things like sci-fi novels by Andre Norton, Harness and some others aka. classical science fiction where it it's basically space travel.
I think I found Twillight boring because I compared it to other high quality horror novels (Kim Harrison, Patricia Briggs, Anne Rice and several others...) and since I do write myself I happen to notice bad style like the character being a classical
Mary Sue quite easily. (Sorry about the jargon).

As you can probably tell, I'm not much for horror: it terrifies me. Guess that makes me sound a bit oversensitive, but I just know what I can handle and what I can't. Stories of the fae are about my limit...

My taste in sci-fi is a bit different: I like the classics too: Asimov and Bradbury (though not Something Wicked Which Way Comes which was horrific for me as a kid) and some old-school cyberpunk like the work of William Gibson.

I can understand how as a writer, you'd be highly discerning. Tim's also that way. For me, it's about character transformation and moments of beauty and courage within the story like the relationship between Sam and Frodo.

I think that's okay, really. I had a time I was terrified of things
I've seen in X-Files (yes, about aliens and such but I couldn't help it),
which was bad because I kinda liked the series, but well, it was more because
of the tension between Scully and Mulder...

What I love about a story is character developtment -- and most of all
when the characters have to fight themselves, something like in Star Wars or
even in Lord of the Rings. In other words I love grey tones in stories.
Black and white are boring and unrealistically.

one-dryad In reply to Miarath [2010-04-08 17:22:21 +0000 UTC]

The X-files was creepy and sometimes even a bit gross, so I empathize with you. And I watched for the same reason: they were really cute like the characters these days in Castle.

Oh, I definitely agree: shades of grey and struggles for redemption make for compelling storylines for sure.

Miarath In reply to one-dryad [2010-04-08 19:49:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I agree. Some of it was more scary than most horror movies can't pull off.
Hmm, yes, too bad that darned bee had to interrupt them.
