Been listening to Sally’s Song too much, hah.
Ego at some point develops a crush on Ed, and combined with her constant worry for the future, it causes her a great deal of distress. Feelings are dumb, why would you think that he’d like you, nothing good will come of it, etc. She knows better than to act on it, and waits for the feeling to pass.
It’s miserable, but it’s better than the alternative. Rejection, or worse - reciprocation.
