Description This is a skate deck I painted for a gallery show in Boston called 'ComnGraf'. Its a one day event featuring over 40 comic and grafitti artists. Some of the best of comic artists in the industry will have art displayed, including Olivier Coipel, Keron Grant, Ed Mcguinnness, and Leinil Francis Yu. I'm honored to be a part of it, and humbled by the amount of talent involved! For those in the Boston area that are interested in attending its this Saturday September 27 from 7-11pm at Technical Skate Shop 230 Newbury St., Boston, MA.

As for the painting itself, its done in Oils, and its the first time I've ever painted with them. It was definitely a learning experience! I'm definitely going to use them again and I'm going to try to do better on the next try, but considering its my first shot at them, I'm not as embarrassed by my effort as I thought i'd be Hope you like!

Are the images of the show going to be online, and do you have a link for the gallery?

I don't think all of them will be, but I could be wrong. I know that Rob Stull, who's putting it on, is going to take lots of pics and put them online, so I'll put a link when that happens.

WOW! That looks really GREAT!!! Your first time painting in oils, you are very talented with them! Honestly! Color choice is wonderful, there is so much depth in the picture and the skin is a dream Looks very natural and all together has definitly the "wow" factor I have the feeling that she is really enjoying posing for the visitors that will come
Please have my best congratulations for the possibility to show your art there!!! That is really fantastic and you deserve it very well I wish I could go to a visit, but it is really to far away *little bit sad*

Thank you! I honestly have a hard time looking at it now without seeing all the faults that it has, but I'm glad you like it! I realize its my first attempt, but I'm pretty critical of my work, so thats just the way I am. But yeah, I had a lot of fun doing this(not at first, but as I progressed), and I'm definitely going to do more oil painting in the future

I am sure that a lot of people will like and love it, you have captured her really very good!! But don`t be to harsh with you, self-critic is really good, but not too much I think this is really a great piece of art !!! I am really enjoying it to look at it and I hope you do too, you can be really very proud of it!!!!

Yeah, Khary's gonna have a piece in the show too! He's a great artist and definitely one of the few guys in comics that I can honestly say is a good friend. I'm stoked to be sharing a gallery with him, especially since we both started out posting stuff on the Top Cow forums in the old days

Hey totally Micah!
this is something new man, i've seen some crazy art on skateboards before at skate events.
Oils are a bit tricky just because you have to wait before adding layers and mixing can be tough but i think they are fun to use!
for sure i'd love to see you stuff like this too.

By the way i just picked up Fathom issue 2 vol.3 with your cover, it looks awesome dude! you posted the pencils for that right?
I also picked up Shrugged#1 just for fun, i noticed you do that little part of hair that tends not to connect to the rest, found that to pretty unique.
I think i liked the bold ink outline the best about that whole style you did, felt very graffiti styled.

keep it up dood

MicahJGunnell In reply to kubankin [2008-09-23 10:15:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I was really worried when I first started painting this that it was going to turn out horrible, but as it progressed along I started to be a little more happy with it. I'm definitely gonna try to do some more paintings in the future, so hopefully I'll improve my skills. Thanks for the kind words on the Shrugged stuff and the Fathom cover! My style has gone through quite a few changes since the Shrugged stuff, but I still do have a lot of the same elements...Thanks again!

Hey no problem man!
i think something like oils takes alot of time and lots of trial and error to get a good hang of how to use it but i wouldn't worry
you should totally bust out a fathom-ish deck sometime!

cheers~
