Description Ah, this was fun - actually this was more than fun considering I refused to budge from the computer until it was completed.

Pumpkinhead Jack and the Scarecrow... well, let the story speak for it I suppose.

``````````
It had been proving to be a dismal day from the very start for the Scarecrow, a type of day Dorothy would have called a 'Sleep Away' day, but considering his inability to sleep, (even if perhaps he sat in a dark room until the next day - or perhaps the one after that just to be safe) all in all, the sun should have never decided on rising on such a horrible, horrible, day.
He had spent most of it looking for the Patchwork Girl, and wearing down his brains with reasons for her running away from the house well after the harvest party had ended - along with any sensible chance to reason with her and the musings that had been the root of their problems. By the time he found her, his fine wit perhaps would be nothing but wheat flour and metal shavings... what a fine mess she was causing yet again.
But now she was gone, no trace other than a scrawled note reading "Be back, keep away from fireplaces, dear. -S." tacked to a patchwork scarf she had been working on, the same scarf he slung around his neck now despite the lovely weather as he continued to sullenly travel down the pathway to Pumpkinhead Jack's humble abode in hopes of finding her there.
She always did find Jack to be of the handsome sort, but his face fell as he came over the hill - finding only the thin mishmash of wood and cloth working in his large garden. Jack himself looking up and raising a hand to the figure on the hill, finally resting upon a post by the garden as Scarecrow finished his aqward path down the hill.
"Is she here, Jack?"
"I know Scarecrow, you're looking for Scraps."
"Is she here?" The strawman repeated, in fear that the gourd perched upon Jack's neck was going slightly off.
"No, no, she left rather quickly after we talked."
"Talked... good heavens, about what?"
"Well she said you didn't want her to be happy, and didn't care to listen to her anymore..."
"But I..."
"Don't explain good friend, she told me all about it and I gave her the best advice I could -"
"Which was to go back home and drop the entire subject -" Scarecrow started, feeling a rush of relief.
"Which was to go out on her own and find what truly would make her happy." Pumpkinhead Jack finished, slightly surprised to see the Scarecrow crumple into himself.
"You told her she should go alone."
"Yes."
"Go out alone and try to find someone who may or may not exist to help her."
"Yes. Actually she seemed quite happily determined to go after that."
"And - you let her go."
Pumpkinhead Jack nodded, rather satisfied with himself.
"You let her go." Scarecrow repeated, more to himself, it was amazing... for the first time in all of his years in existance, he experienced the urge to trottle someone, especially the creature so calmly standing before him. But what could he do? Perhaps Ozma and her magic picture would be able to help in finding her - but knowing Scraps she'd refuse to come back until she found what she was looking for - leaving everyone else to watch in perhaps horror as something... well.... horrible occured to her poor stitched and stuffed person and than the only one to blame would be himself and Dorothy and the others would never forgive him, and... and...
It was turning out to be a very dismal day for him indeed.
Very nicely drawn and written! I read all of the original Oz books back in the day; the Patchwork Girl was one of my favourites, along with our dear pumpkinhead. I can totally see Scraps being with the Scarecrow and driving him crazy!
I know that Patchwork Girl, Scarecrow, and Jack Pumpkinhead were created by L. F. Baum, but is this story from a book he wrote? Or did you write it? (I'm only asking because there are over forty oz books and only fifteen, sixteen - something like that - were written by him, and I only read Baums first two books...so I would have no idea which book this came from if it's from a book nor would I be able to tell if you wrote it)
Danke - its one of my favorites too, writing wise and drawing wise. ^_^
Heh, and as much as I do enjoy those rare pairings that I come across on alternate writings, I'll always be a Patchwork girl/Scarecrow supporter... love that book to death to the point that I bought it in hardcover to cut down on the wear and tear.
Oh. Thanks for clarifying that for me That's a very interesting story ya got there. Usually when people pair the Scarecrow w/ someone it's Dorothy from the movie. Good to see someone doing something different xD
...and I'm still looking to read all of them... >_<
Besides that point, actually I wrote that little bit that went with the picture, don't write as often as I draw - but it's still enjoyable when that little bug bites. But that's a good point... I probably should make note aside from sticking a -MAS besides the ones I do write just for the sake of avoiding confusion.
Truly, deeply... this is so beautiful. ;__; Such quiet, meditative energy is wrought in this representation - I am in awe! Jack is a wee bit dippy, I understand. X3
Though, it could be a false veneer, a 'ruse'. X3 After all, he DOES think that he is more handsome than the Scarecrow...
A justly magnificent, awe-inspiring image... thank you for sharing~! ;__;
I have never read the books, but you just convinced me I need to get off my arse and do that. If Tad Williams could not convince me and you could, count that as a great ripping load of talent, my friend
OMG!!! This is so cool!!! It's like one of my characters (my fursona) he has a Jack-o-lantern face on his back... but he sometimes dresses up as a scarecrow (with a pumpkin head) I need to doodle a good pic of him like that... and actually finish it. hmmm.... I'm getting off subject... anywho, I love this and it requires that I it now!
