I'd been thinking of that but I think it'd make them look a little weaker in the expression... though they could extend as weak points for cannon fire later when he gets really mad, potentially.

If you were planning on having them extend, maybe you should make them a bit smaller and entirely black, because it seems like the eyes look like a vertebrate's. But I think that you could really take some artistic license and make stalked eyes really intimidating, and personally I think the upper claw finger bits could use some beefing up to make the claws a bit more intimidating.
