I've had the pleasure of doing some illustrations of Reef for official stuff recently! Dope MC!

Hey it's Michi from the MSPA forums!

This is probably the most inspiratational drawing I have ever seen.

Yay!

I'm fascinated by your colouring technique. Is it just overlayed semi-transparent strokes?

michaelfirman In reply to michiforjoy [2010-01-22 00:49:36 +0000 UTC]

The bulk of the strokes in the image are on a single layer with a hard edged brush whose opacity is linked to the pen pressure. It often looks like a lot of overlapped work because that's what I'm doing; constantly painting over spots I've already filled searching for the best descriptive stroke. Sort of like sculpting the figure out of the canvas, feeling for the form, if that makes any sense.

At a few points throughout illustrating I'll often toss in an overlay layer or two to shortcut texturizing, unifying the colour, or else to just experiment with new directions to take the piece in.

So cool! I'd been wondering this since I saw you put this up I think maybe in the DOODLE thread on those boards.

You must have been doing art for a loooong time. I look forward to seeing more of your stuff! (Even if it means Moe disappears into the sunset.)

Thanks Michi!

I've been doing art for a little over five years now, which is embarrassing to point out since so many other artists have developed so much further in that time.

Dude you are so developed you don't need anything else. Your film has already been in the slurry of darkroom chemicals, you know?

Anyway I was thinking, and it might be a bit cheesy for a man of your tastes, but I am soliciting 4x3 (wider than tall) images that might belong in a French movie called "Mustard Fields", for my little webcomic. If you so much as drew two lines on a 800x600 canvas I would use it with reverence.

Michi I'd love to help you out but I have to give priority to commissions!

If you're not going to record yourself while making a new painting, I'm gonna... I'm gonna... I'm not gonna love you anymore!

Ha ha, I appreciate your interest Jack! I'm still worried that if I do it I'll expose that I'm a fraud and everyone will say "Psh, anyone could do what he's doing". Maybe I should just do a video tutorial on how to be insecure!

I'm trying to do it.
And I fail.
Maybe... you want to... check it out?

Hey, are you an actual fan of rap? It seems like everybody I meet through the internet is a fan of heavy metal or japanese music.
Awesome picture as usual, I especially like the background. Very stencil-esque.

Yeah I love rap! But don't have many friends who care for it, let alone to the extent that I do. I still enjoy most other styles of music but rap is definitely my favourite
