Description

Kingdom Hearts 3 overall was a very mediocre game to me. Thought it a stretch to go for the Re:Mind DLC myself, but I watched some Let's Plays. If the main game had more scenes like this (i.e. a little extra emphasis on the classic Disney characters having an integral role in the main plot) I'd probably have a different opinion of KH3. I just grew tired of any of the KH-original characters that weren't Sora, Riku, and Kairi (though I also grew to like the Wayfinder trio) as the series went on, so as all those clones and alternate versions of characters became more abundant and more the focus, I drifted more away from the series.

In spite of that, it was very cool to see a scene like this in the Re:Mind story. I'd been waiting for Mickey to get a big, triumphant scene like this since KH1, and the way this scene was woven into the story made for quite an impactful moment.

(I now see that there's one too many Xehanort copies in my drawing, and that Mickey's Keyblade is a little off model, but oh well... haha)

Wonder what kind of Disney/S-E balance awaits in the sequels to come… Hopefully balanced enough to get me back on board!

Yeah, it does feel KH has kinda drifted away from the more appealing Disney side to an extent, though watching Let's Plays of the game, I AM rather pleased at how Toy Story and Monsters Inc were handled in the context of things. The Pixar crew aren't having any of that angsty crap, and deal with the villains accordingly and that's hilarious to me.Β

Awesome work as always BTW, always fun to see your take on the KH series.

Y'know, I legitimately forgot BH6 was in the game until you mentioned it. That film in general just kinda slid off me, same with the TV show tbh, and I kinda like the show when I remember it exists. All I remember is something about the Heartless possessing Baymax's old body.Β

While a silly nitpick, I think a huge missed opportunity for BH6's world was to have Donald and Goofy dressed up as PK and Super Goof.Β

Yeah, there's a certain humor in the Frozen and Tangled adaption just being straight up the films, only with Sora, Donald and Goofy standing in the corner somewhere.Β

Granted you can say that about most of KH, but it feels especially egregious here.Β

I do recall something about the original KH originally planning to have Toy Story involved, limited to Woody and Buzz being summons I think? So at the very least, they saved the best for last!

Oh yeah, Woody not taking any of 'Nort #86709's crap is the best thing I've seen in KH over the years.Β

I do hope the next few games will be more ... cohesive...? A common complaint I heard was people taking issue with Kairi's treatment , though the DLC treats her better....? I think? That I'm not sure on.

Personally, I'd be open to a little side story game involving Kairi teaming up with Pluto and Della Duck (Ducktales Reboot Version).Β

My feelings are exactly the same as yours with these additional scenes. KH3 originally focused a lot more on the overarching plot than the characters, I feel, and the DLC really was worth every penny, though I wish it were part of the original game.

This Mickey scene was my favorite. They really hit home.

I thought the gameplay of KH3 was the best the series has had to offer. But the story has been an unsalvageable sack of dogshit for a very long time.Β

My roommate and I figured out all the various mechanics. It's honestly a bit overwhelming and if you really know what you're doing, combat becomes an easy, if very exciting, cakewalk.

They very clearly intend to continue the story. They really shouldn't.

I'm the opposite of that since I really loved KH3, flaws and all. As I thought KH2 was the more mediocre game. But to each their own, this is still an awesome pic ^^.

Actually I totally get what you mean, that's what got me into KH in general as well...that and my fave Disney movie was a world in the first game lol.

Though I think if there's anything that can go about the problem could be is that Disney doesn't wanna push any boundaries when it comes to specific brands stepping out of their own comfort zone when it comes to being part of the bigger narrative with some here and there. That's why I thought KH3 did a much better job with that than KH2, but for wanting to focus mostly on the Disney aspect, I see your point.

Also not sure if you'll agree with me on this since I've been following the series since the beginning, when you break the narrative down to certain key points, its not really confusing, but it IS convoluted with the way they try to explain it. Like with the whole alternate versions of themselves at least to me makes sense when you look at it with the perspective of clones in science fiction, are they their own person and deserves to have a soul? Or will do they deserved to be lost and forgotten as just a fake version of who they're based off of. I think if the story of KH was told through that perspective and made its philosophy clearer, maybe more people might be more on board with it, but that's just me.

Honestly its just REALLY nice to hear somebody out there who loves the original KH like I do ^^

Well it does come back in Dream Drop Distance and it gets expanded XD

Yeah I wouldn't say that, its kinda like how people think just because something is dark makes it art or adult, when really its about the execution. If there is anything I can compare the narrative of KH to is a shonen manga/anime. Unlike most stories that has a planned beginning, middle and end, KH is done in the ways of writing by the seat of their pants, but let's be honest too, now that Disney is more involved than ever, we may be seeing this go on for a while lol. Though with the whole retcon thing, that can be debatable considering we don't know if this is what Nomura planned since KH1 as he wasn't sure at the time if KH1 would be the ONLY title of the entire series, funny how things work out like that in hindsight.

I think too with some of the themes you brought up that they're common elements in most jrpg stories, hell, you want a series that's even more cliched about light vs. darkness, try Dragon Quest XD. But this is also a game series where unlike other jrpgs that have older themes to it, the charm of kingdom hearts is about appealing to the kid in all of us and how we grow up in time, and like nostalgia and old disney films, they can be corny, it just depends on if they're for you or not like how not many disney films are for everybody, its all subjective. Which is also funny cause everyone has different reasons for liking the series, whether its for the story, the characters, the gameplay (combat, exploration), the disney worlds etc. Its always fascinating that people have different reasons for them and yet right with each other about different opinions when really we just like the same series lol.

But yeah, it was a great chat, hope I didn't chat your ear off XD;;
