I just almost always think: "Man it'd be interesting to see the villain win and become the protagonist", like these days villains hav more complex motives
and are often more interesting to me than your typical "good guy" hero.
Death Note was interesting to me, because the protagonist became in fact the villain.
Of course the battle of wits as well, but I think that intrigued me the most.

The hero becoming the villain in the end also seems good most of the time as change of pace indeed. A villain becoming the hero is rather rare I think. Only movie that comes to mind for something like it is MEGAMIND
