what type of stuff did you use to protect your iron with

I mostly use some baking paper between my iron and the beads. I guess you can also buy special iron paper for ironing hama beads but I figured baking paper does it's job too and people usually have it in the house so there ya go

How big is it and how many pegboards did you have to use?

I think I used 2 pegboards mainly. Maybe 3 to add a few little details that didn't fit on the 2 boards. It's about 15 to 20 cm's in height.
