Description
"Horns"
In animal anatomy, a horn is a hard, pointed projection on an animals head. True horns consist of a core of live bone covered in keratin and other proteins. Other structures called horns include the antlers of deer, which unlike horns are not permanent, and the ossicones of giraffids, which are covered in skin and hair. Horns and horn like organs are found in several animal families, most notably bovid mammals such as antelope, sheep, goats and cattle, but also in groups from deer and lizards to dinosaurs and beetles. Despite the wide variety of animals that posses horns, and the many shapes and sizes that horns come in, horns serve a similar purpose; to serve as weapons against predators and rivals of their own kind, and to display to potential mates. Many animals who posses horns, such as rhinoceros and many species of antelope, are heavily hunted for their horns, either for trophies and decoration or to used in traditional Chinese medicine.

I love the common names you give to the extinct animals, like the Star-frilled hornface. It gives unique character to those long forgotten to the mists of time.

Thanks! When I did all the mammal families I gave common names to all the extinct species I did in each family. It's pretty tough sometimes, especially when its a species not at all related to any living animal with a common name.

Hmm that's true. There's so many species that it's a challenge. By the way, I'm trying to give common names to various dinosaur groups in the land of Tiberia and I wanted to know if these ones worked.
Tyrants: Tyrannosaurids
Shieldheads: Ceratopsians
Shrykes: Dromaeosaurids
Titans: Sauropods
Duckbills: Hadrosaurs
Madars: Ankylosaurs
Sprinters: non-Hadrosaur Ornithopods

Those are good ones. I also call tyrannosaurs tyrants or rexes(rex could be exclusive to T.rex). Ceratopsians I'd call hornfaces but shieldhead isnt bad. Ive never heard of "madars" before though.

It's a Mongolian word for brute and seeing how a few Ankylosaurs were Mongolian, it made sense.

Do you think rodents or camels or horses have what it takes to grow horns?
