My wife got a cat before we had met, but when we moved in together it became a joke how much the cat preferred me. It was honestly kind of obnoxious how much the cat demanded my attention. She would jump in my lap and I would have to aggressively scratch her for 10-15 minutes at a time. She would end up drooling all over me. If I did not play with her at night, she would start to attack us. She always laid down on my side of the bed just before I went to sleep, and curl up at my feet during the night. Then she should attack my feet in the middle of the night. I would always talk to her sarcastically about how she was a bad cat and that I did not like her. Really I had become very attached to the cat.

As things between me and my ex stagnated, the cat was the only reliable source of affection I got at home. When we separated, she took the cat with her. I have missed that cat much more than I expected. If anything made the loneliness in the house real to me that first night after she left, it was the absence of our pet.

It's weird to mourn a pet that you know perfectly well is still alive. Yet that is the only way I can explain what I am feeling. I wonder if she is wondering about me. I hope she is doing well.
