Description Now in the UK, we don't have Quarter Horses. I always liked the sound of them though, hardy little critters who can go all day at a trot and not tire, brave enough to tackle a steer, and pretty enough to win a show. However, when I started looking on the internet (google and youtube ect) I came across something called Halter.

Now in England, we do have In Hand classes, but they are usually only for youngsters that aren't ready to be ridden, or just for grading horses that are allready proven performers. In these Halter Classes, however, the horse isn't required to be athletic, or even correctly conformed. This is what is seen as normal - [link]

Now I thought QHs were supposed to be pretty speedy over 1/4 of a mile? This hideous creature can barely walk! (See the video on the Bertonqh site)

So I drew what I would have if I had to own a QH. He has an intelligent pony face, foxy ears and small, hard hooves. He has a lot of power in his hocks and through his shoulders and hindquarters - He can collect and extend as well as any dressage horse. He is bold and smart and a pretty Red Dun, to boot. He stands at 14.2hh. All this, and he doesn't look like a hippo!

Anyways, I hope you like my picture, haven't done much finished art recently. Oh, and this is my first time drawing a red dun, hope I got it right! Oh, done in Photoshop, took a couple of hours.

I find 'meat tanks' ugly. They look horribly out of proportion to me. Tiny ears, tiny feet, tiny eyes, tiny head, huge body....urgh.

Quarter horses are used for a lot of different things in the States. And their conformation and soundness adjusts accordingly.
Racing QH are leggier, more thoroughbred in appearance.
Reining/cowhorses look almost exactly like your drawing there.
Both of the horses with the jobs above, well I noticed there is a lot of crossing with Thoroughbreds to get speed into them. Those crosses are called Appendix.

I live in West Virginia. Our area mainly does barrel racing and western riding. Sad for me, I wanted to do English.
I've owned Appendix and one halter-bred. I'll stick with my cow QH or Quarabs thank you.
The halter-bred was rather insane and easily sick. The Appendix bred, well they had a lot of halter horses in it, so I can't tell if it's that breeding or Thoroughbred in them. I sent one back the same day I got her and the other took me two years and many heart attacks to get rid of.

Halter QHes are hideous. They're bred, bulked up on steriods, among other stuff, and expected to look like Sir Cool Skip by two. Horrid. Along with that, none are ever broke, and my farrier refuses to them because of the poor conditions of the hooves. A good 1500 lbs balanced on four tiny lumps about 7 x 7 cm.

Just had to get that off my chest. Now, I love your's. Reminds me somewhat of the actual breed called Quarter Ponies. It's nice to see free movement in the trot. I went to the site, even though the picture of the stallion has popped up various times on a horse forums that I'm a part of. Sadly, I couldn't find the video on his page; could you directly link it to me?

I agree 100%

As I said, I'm from the UK, and riding over here is very sport orientated - Nearly everybody jumps, schools, hacks out ect, So when I came across these hippo-horses I nearly had a heart attack

I'll have a look for you

Thanks. Yeah, here in Canada, the majority are hunter/jumper, jumper, dressage and eventing. Not too much of western. But the US is stuffed full of those things. I swear, half of the AQHA horses are inbred.

I disagree. Here in the US, yes there is a lot of western riding, but there is probably more english than anything.

I guess I kind of have to agree with that, but, the U.S. also has a large population of people compared to us. What are your major horse states? Our provinces are, basically, B.C., Alberta and Ontario with a little bit of Quebec for any type of major riding, though lots of the central and eastern provinces get into the PPG and Endurance stuff.

Would you care to list the main ones then? I'm obviously ignorant of the states in which English riding is extremely popular.

no not really. I don't really care now nor am I going to sit here for an hour thinking of all of the states. Oh wow that sounded very rude. I'm sorry, I just can't. I have too many other things to do XD Ok?

I disagree. I think their beautiful. And purebred QH's arent all Inbred. The Hooves arent in Poor Quality. And Canadian's Do Halter Just as much as the states. And there is lots of western here. Ever heard of the Calgary Stampede? Or All The Damn Rodeos that go on?! "english" style riding isnt the Top Majority in Canada. You should learn more about it.

Everyone has their own opinions. My opinion is that halter QHes are ugly. I like normal quarter horses well enough though. Sure, there's western. I didn't say there wasn't; only that the english isn't the minority. You're much more likely to find shows with singular jumping, dressage or hunter, rather than barrels, reining, or cutting. Trust me, I know ALL about it.
