Story
The heat of the forge, the smell of ash and hot metal, it was an addicting sense to the blacksmith. Alarogan could stay by a well heated forge and anvil for days and never get bored as he fashioned something new every day. But, on that particular night, he was feeling a bit distracted. Drawing his curved talons over white hot steel, carving an intricate pattern and his own personal seal into it while the metals were soft enough to be cut like butter, his thoughts wandered to the slave merchant who was technically still his boss. Their contract had lasted two years and it was drawing to a close soon, leaving it up to him to either renew the agreement or walk away. That night, waking up in Jiraiya’s nest had certainly not been part of the plan, but the black tiercel could not bring himself to regret any of it, apart from the hangover. Jiraiya wasn’t even a bad employer to make Alarogan want to not be employed. As his thoughts drifted in and out of focus on his task, Ro’s ear perked up at the sounds of a crowd gathering outside. Alana, Hyrenna and Niamah were all awake, despite the late hour and looking outside in awe as lights streaked across the skies. Alarogan stepped out and looked at the light show, which reminded him of when he had received Ember’s egg from the skies. Was another event like that happening again? It seemed the rest of the herd thought so and were celebrating below.Alarogan smiled softly when he saw the look in the three female’s eyes, and allowed them to go down and enjoy the festivities if they wanted to. There was no harm in unwinding a bit during beautiful events. He even flew down to join in as well. For a few hours, he walked around, drank and talked with other tiercels, mostly mercenaries. Sometimes he missed flying out to the far reaches of the desert with his albino brother, Khonsu, and liked to hear news from other mercenaries. After a while, as the meteor shower was getting to the point there were several stars falling every few seconds, Alarogan gathered up his slaves and daughter to take them home to sleep. Hyrenna and Niamah had chores to do in the morning, and Alana had her lessons, so he wanted them all to get some sleep. They had just returned to the roost before he heard the first screams and turned in time to feel small shards of rock strike him in the face and wings. Hissing, the tiercel went out to see what was going on, in time to see the largest meteorite hurtling straight toward the oasis as if in slow motion!Parts broke away as it drew closer, and one sped toward his home. He only had enough time to throw himself over the trio and shield them with his wings before it struck the forge and caused it to explode with an ear shattering crash. The blacksmith was hearing a high pitched ringing in his ears as he shoved Alana and Hyrenna out of the roost, seeing dust falling from the ceiling as the Honeycomb was struck and the upper roosts began to collapse. He had pushed the two hens out rather unceremoniously, and was about to do the same for the austerian doe, only to remember at the last moment that she would plummet to the ground below if he did, with no wings to catch the air. So the large saraph reared up and grabbed her around the middle before leaping out, Ember clinging to his back and the whole roost collapsing under its own weight behind them. Niamah was almost larger then Alarogan by this point and her weight pulled him down even as he tried to use the wind to keep them up. His talons were gouging her sides and it was all he could do to not drop her until they were over the pools, where she would have a wet but safer landing. Then it was just about taking cover until it was over. After things had quieted down, and his hearing began to return, Alarogan crept from his hiding place, looking around at the one beautiful and lively oasis. So many were lying broken on the ground, others little more than a mound of blood and feathers. Many were grieving and the tiercel stumbled through it, looking for his brother, his Jiraiya, his children and slaves. He found his children first… at least, four of them. They were dead. Beautiful red hen Rillina, stoic black tiercel Toric, and the sweet and gentle twin hens, Nifiteri and Silna. The twins were clutching each other in death, and Toric was only recognizable by his distinctly crooked crest of feathers. Rillina was clutched to her mother, who was crying loudly over the loss.Seeing Rillina’s mother brought back thoughts of his own mother and the blacksmith turned on his hooves and ran for the roost of his father. Ma’at was standing outside the rubble, Thoth on his side beside her, struck in the leg and unable to stand. Neva wasn’t anywhere to be found.Alarogan demanded to know where his mother was, but even he could not hear himself, it was as if the world had gone mute as he knew the answer, looking at the mountain of rubble that had been his childhood home.He dived into the rocks, shoving and pulling them free, causing many rockslides that threatened to bury him as well. This couldn’t be happening, it just… couldn’t.He dug until he found her, lying still and dirty, her once soft feathers bent in awkward angles on his wingless back. Tears streamed down Alarogan’s face as he sat beside her heavily, head bowed and ears pinned back. He felt broken with this discovery, his glimmer of hope she wasn’t dead dashed away.“Why… why didn’t you… WHY DIDN’T YOU GET HER OUT?!?!” the blacksmith roared, looking at Thoth and Ma’at with icy blue eyes that could freeze the blood in anyone’s veins. “YOU COULD HAVE SAVED HER!!” he roared again, and charged toward both, intent on venting his rage and vengeance in them both. Tear, rip and mangle them till they never touched the skies that had been so cruelly denied from his mother. Make them suffer.
