Description This is actually some concept artwork I did for a series I wanted to start but I couldn't find the right story. I kept changing and then I eventually gave up

The original idea was actually inspired by a song of the same name by Owl City

Anyway, I really like how this piece has come out overall. Some of my best background work I think

I favourited this because you made such a beautiful sky! The sky is what caught my attention! Lovely colours! And nicely shaded! A good blend of soft gradients and hard lined shadows and highlights. Well done!

wow thanks, great hearing some real feedback! I really like how this piece has turned out (especially when it came to the sky). I wanted to create something soft for the background that's very clean, smooth and generally beautiful. then for the foreground I wanted something sharper in contrast. I never really add any background to my pieces so this was a nice change of pace. I'm glad you like how it's come out

Oh absolutely, I think the background is amazing! Is it a mixture of gradients and Special FX or is there some paint work in the background too? You've got a few different colours so it looks like you've layered some different colours and possibly FX and painted the moons glow in. The grass down the bottom is a nice touch too and adds some separation to the piece, which is good.

you're 100% right, I did a little light painting in there. The moon glow is painted, the stars where dotted individually, the shooting star was both painted and a fun little extra last minute touch. the grass was a tricky one when it came to choosing colour but I think the purple really works nicely with the piece as a whole. like you said, seperation. I wasn't special FX crazy but I did add in a few along the way to make certain aspects stand out more

Ah very cool. Yes I thought you dotted the stars individually, it has that nice hand painted touch. Ah yes definitely a good colour choice for the grass, purples can work very well in night time scenes. Would be cool to see a piece like this animated. Would actually be possible with after effects... Wouldn't be too hard either if one knew their way around the program

I was actually considering animating this earlier. I have the layers saved so it's an actual possibility. or I could recreate a similar image and work from that. That might work a little better. I'd probably animate it in Flash

SilverGameDesigns In reply to MidnightFrog [2012-12-10 03:19:58 +0000 UTC]

Hm have you got After Effects and have you animated it before? It would be super easy to animate it with the pin tool. You can put a pin for example at the base of the wing and the tip of the wing, then animate it by dragging the pins around. It's super easy and super cool! If you had the hair on a separate layer you could even have his hair blowing The only issue is I don't know if you an export as a swf from AE... But you can export animated GIFs Plus it imports all of your Photoshop layers automatically if you import a psd file!

sadly I do not own a copy of after effects. Although I do have access to it at college. I could stay after hours and work on it a little each day. plus, animating this in it would make great practice (I've never really used it before). So, it's win-win. It's like when I thought myself how to use cubase to record, edit and create music. It's all about practice

True. Well, no harm in doing something in Flash at home if that's easier access for you Just thought I'd mention that AE can do some really awesome stuff! Good luck with it Look forward to seeing the result!

he went to that show?!? aw, awesome XD I would laugh if I saw him as Batman in person c:
I went with my mum (she's a fan too) and two other friends to his show in SF in July. It was sold out, but really intimate. I also met Jasper. He's coolz.

Aw, sweet! I think I'm actually jealous XD

According to my brother the best part was when adam was singing speed of love. he said the lyrics went perfectly with his batman costume. I've got to see him next time he comes to england.

hopefully college work doesn't get in the way again

I totally understand you. I'm in college as well, and I hope that the next Owl City concert in California won't be when I'm busy studying
But look for an opportunity. Especially an opportunity to meet someone from the band. Adam rarely hangs out after the concert, but his band members do.
