Very beautiful. I am going to do a piece involving the Samarhan soon. I'll keep you in the loop on its progress. I think you would appreciate it, esp. considerimg the mythic women you have been doing. It has been really inspiring to me. Very nice work.

Thank you, but what is the Samarhan?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JustinRaven In reply to midoriharada [2009-04-09 13:42:23 +0000 UTC]

Samarhan, pronounced Shamarhan, is a Turkish (Anatolian) myth about a serpent woman like the Medusa, but without snakes in her hair. She grants healing. There is a male version of this myth, as well.

I didn't know her.
Is she look like Lamia in Greek myth?

Yes, in a way. I did a sketch of her I will post here in the next couple of days. Keep a look out and I will also put a link here to some traditional images and a cool movie about her.

Video-very cool, but in Turkish. A beautiful story, but it helps to know some of the story to understand this:

History:
[link] (The male Şahmaran)

A variant from a poem:
Shahmaran is presented as the only creature that possesses the crucial knowledge needed to reach the hiding-place of the legendary ring symbolizing immortality, strength, power, and wisdom that was worn by King Solomon. The key is an herb: if a person applies the herb to his feet, he will be able to walk on water and thus reach the otherwise inaccessible island of King Solomon where the ring is hidden. Shahmaran knows he must keep this information secret because human beings are selfish and greedy and can cope with neither immortality nor with infinite power and wisdom: for the ring to fall into human hands would be a disaster for all mankind. In the effort to protect this secret, Shahmaran dies. But though men are deprived of their hopes of immortality and infinite power and wisdom, they still continue to dream of it.

Most of the stories are about the male Sahmaran, but the female is also a myth of Turkey, actually, one that is prevalent in most of the asiatic/indo-european world. Here is the female sahmaran's story. Mind the grammar errors

According to myth, Sahmaran who is the Queen of snakes live under the tunnels of Istanbul where is suitable geographically for her and one day a Bey (turkish titleey=Lord) who is cheated by his enemies, fell into a deep well. Somehow he can find a way underground and he meets Sahmaran by chance. Sahmaran who has prejudices about human beings and hates them, finds some common features about that man who has told her how he cheated by his enemies. After some friendship and emotional approach, unfortunately the man decides to be on ground and see the sunshine. Sahmaran desperately accepts his wish but she tells him that she knows her destiny and pleases not to get naked or show any parts of his body to anyone. Then the man accepts and leaves the tunnels. Some time later the man who gets his freedom, falls in love with the girl whose father is a King. Just before their marriage the King gets poisoned and it's told him to drink the anti-dot who has only got by Sahmaran and also causes Sahmaran to die. No one knows the place of Sahmaran until the girl sees his darling has a scale skin when he gets naked. The girl informs to his father and the man gets arrested by the soldiers. At last the man has to betray Sahmaran for his own life.

Eloquent capture of the goddess. I was reading so much on the Hindu deities at one point it was insane; a LOT of mythos in there. You even tied the lotus theme in there too; awesome.

Yep that's very much true, but what's an artist if they don't take liberties on the source material?!? I tell 'ya what! An...artist still xD. But it's cool. I'd love to see more of these from you, especially since I'm gonna be reading up on it again, and probably some Chinese mythology as well. Mythology is fun.
