My family was in the Dutch West Indies, and after the war everyone left for Holland. My parents were married there but then they decided to emigrate to Canada, and my mother's sister went to the USA, and her half sister went off to New Zealand! I never asked them why they chose here, and as close as my mother's family was Im surprised that they didnt seek to live close. I know my mother wrote to my grandmother every day almost and same with the sisters. It never really made sense. At one point my family tried to sponsor my aunt and uncle and the two kids but my father didnt make enough money and they turned him down. I remember my mother being very sad about that.
I have not been back to Holland as an adult. My father went there about 15 years ago and tried to dig up some of his family but out of the 15 children none of them were close and all but my dad and his youngest sister have died now. My mother died in 1991, and there is only my father left and my brother who lives in the Carribean.
Sadly my step-mom was just diagnosed with lung and bone cancer. I worry about my dad now having to go through that with another person he loves, and hes almost 80 years old.

TY! I know its going to be hard for my dad, hes going to be 80 this year. Hes been through a lot in his life. Holland is so small too! Easier to get together. Even if we all lived in Canada it is a huge country and takes a long time to travel from one end to the other.
