Here is an awesome sprite animation program, you can also animate other types as well:

On that site you can download a free version and a pro version (it is also out on Steam for instance).
It supports all kinds of animation methods like frame by frame animation and it can also use a modular approach with knowing of the 3D planes (for example parts of the back arm are automatically hidden).
Modular animation allows you to exchange and edit the arms only, without the need to change the entire sprite entirely.

Though I spot an anomaly with the fiery part of the sword.
Shouldn't the fire give off some kind of light against the metal, especially since in the middle the sigil gives off light (a inconsistency as well).
Perhaps a red dithering zones would create that or a gradient (though you don't use gradients).

Yep, very interesting and very useful too (I bought the pro version).
Made a marching robot with a swaying weapon in hand, doing the animation was a breeze.
Oh well, next time you will fix that if you do light casting against metal.
The old fashioned way of making animation is also labour-intensive, so it is understandable you don't do it often.
Making a series of sketches as a storyboard can help a lot in visualising the animation and finding out possible problems and hurdles.

I use PaintTool Sai to do my pixel art, and then take it to photoshop to make the image have a transparent bg/no bg at all. And then I use GIMP to animate xD
Long process and many programs, but it's what I'm familiar with haha
I have a tutorial I did a long time ago, what I do is pretty much unchanged, besides the fact that I don't clean my lines before I start colouring anymore. It saves time to just colour over my sketch as I go.

GIMP is a free program and it can do all the stuff that I use Sai and PS for aha
You can even use MSpaint to do pixel art really ^^
