Битката при Адрианопол (1205) е сблъсък между българска армия, водена от цар Калоян, и кръстоносци от Латинската империя, начело с император Балдуин I. В битката цар Калоян разгромява рицарите и пленява императора им, който е затворен на върха на една от кулите в крепостта Царевец, където по-късно умира в плен.

В състава на българската армия освен български войски, са включени и кумански отряди от лека конница и конни стрелци, тъй като по това време куманите са съюзници на Калоян. Самият цар Калоян е женен за куманската принцеса Анна. Хрониста ги посочва като 14 000 кумани, които „…не били кръстени…“. Тяхната конница изиграва важна роля в хода на битката. Останалите войски били “българи и власи'' на брой 40 000.

Победата на българите над смятаната дотогава за непобедима западноевропейска рицарска войска е впечатляващо събитие за тогавашния свят. Вестта за разгрома на рицарите се разнася бързо в цяла Европа. Само една година след нейното създаване на Латинската империя е нанесен тежък удар, който поставя началото на нейния край. Балканските земи са спасени от по-нататъшно латинско завладяване. В същото време успехът при Адрианопол води до окончателното укрепване на Второто българско царство, което е главна заслуга на цар Калоян като владетел. България се утвърждава като авторитетна политическа и военна сила в Югоизточна Европа.

Две години след битката при Адрианопол - Калоян тръгва да опожарява други латински градове и градове на византийски бунтовници, които са започнали да заговорничат срещу него. Византийският историк Георги Акрополит дава следното обяснение защо царят е дал заповедите: „Той отмъщаваше, както се казва, за злото, което Василий II извърши срещу българите; каза, както Василий се нарече Българоубиец, той [Калоян] се нарече Ромеоубиец…"

The Battle of Adrianople (1205) was a clash between the Bulgarian army led by Tsar Kaloyan and crusaders from the Latin Empire, led by Emperor Baldwin I. In the battle, Tsar Kaloyan defeated the knights and captured their emperor, who was imprisoned atop one of the towers in Tsarevets fortress in Veliko Tarnovo, where he later died in captivity.

In addition to Bulgarian troops, the composition of the Bulgarian army also included Cuman detachments of light cavalry and horse archers, since at that time the Cumans were allies of Kaloyan. Tsar Kaloyan himself was married to the Cuman princess Anna. The chronicler lists them as 14,000 Cumans who "…were not baptized…". Their cavalry played an important role in the course of the battle. The remaining troops were "Bulgarians and Vlachs" numbering 40,000.

The victory of the Bulgarians over the previously considered invincible Western European Crusader Army was an impressive event for the world at that time. The news of the defeat of the knights spread quickly throughout Europe. Only a year after its creation, the Latin Empire was dealt a heavy blow that marked the beginning of its end. The Balkan lands were saved from further Latin conquest. At the same time, the success at Adrianople led to the final strengthening of the Second Bulgarian Empire, which was the main merit of Tsar Kaloyan as a ruler. Bulgaria asserted itself as an authoritative political and military power in Southeast Europe.

Two years after the Battle of Adrianople, Kaloyan set out to burn other Latin cities and towns of Byzantine rebels who had begun to conspire against him. The Byzantine historian George Acropolitus gives the following explanation as to why the king gave the orders: “He was taking revenge, as they say, for the evil that Basil II committed against the Bulgarians; said, as Basil called himself the Bulgarslayer, he [Kaloyan] called himself the Romanslayer…".
