Description

This artwork depicts a military vehicle which is a part of my sci-fi world's lore. Do not copy the design, use it in your own artworks, or claim it as your own!

Lore and Description:

PD 78 "Bathor" is a common variant of a series of vehicles that have been produced in Rotharn since the "cold war" that preceeded the breakout of the Global War and remained in service until the present day. As the design is quite old, many features can be considered outdated in comparison to more modern designs. For example, the engine is mounted in the back, so there is no rear door/ramp for rapid deployment and soldiers have to enter and exit the vehicle through a side two-piece door, or a series of roof hatches - both options being uncomfortable and leaving them more exposed to enemy fire. The driver's windows are an obvious weakspot and thus are often covered with additional armor plates and periscopes are used instead. A small round turret contains the vehicle's only armament - a 16 × 128 mm heavy machine gun. It has a slow rate of fire but it is surprisingly lethal both against infantry and light vehicles. In modern days, it also became an effective counter against low-flying drones which often swarm the battlefield in great numbers - this is aided by the turret's design which allows for a good degree of elevation. Furthermore, there are hatches in the side armor which allow soldiers to fire their personal weapons from the inside. The armor is weak and only reliably protects against heavy MG fire from the front and small arms fire and shrapnels from all sides. Despite all these drawbacks, the vehicle remains in service with the Rotharnian Armed Forces, as it was produced in the thousands and also spawned many specialized variants. Some upgraded versions also exist, which address some of the issues of the basic APC variant. Despite that, more elite units and most of the contractors fighting on the Rotharnian side have switched to more modern designs, such as the PGD 07 infantry fighting vehicle.

Inspiration and Background Information:
The main inspiration for this design was the Soviet BTR series of armored personnel carriers, however, elements of other vehicles have also influenced some shapes and details, for example, the driver's cabin is reminiscent of that of the South African "Ratel".
