Amy: To be fair, Himawari probably CAN read basic Japanese, but at age 6, it is unlikely that she can read the kanji in that book. Japanese children typically obtain basic literacy by the end of kindergarten, but do not begin learning kanji until grade school, and since Jiraiya's books are meant for adults, the kanji is likely far above what she can read.
