Depression is a choice, my dear,And happiness the same
You choose this illness, don’t you?
What a tragic little game.
Depression is an option, love
Just get up out of bed
Take your tears and worries
And just smile now instead.
Depression is a choice, you see,
And so is suicide.
Just sit back, kick your feet up, dear
Enjoy this perfect ride.
Get over your own standards
Of what everyone should be.
Just smile for once, and maybe
You’ll be living perfectly.
...
But...
Depression is an illness
That we feel so deep within.
Why would anybody choose
To write poetry on their skin?
Unless there lies a reason, dear,
I would not choose to die.
If depression was an option...
Well...
I’d choose to say goodbye.

Depression is a medical condition caused by an imbalance of dopamine, seratonin, or similar chemicals in the brain, very often linked to the thyroid process.
Very often it is not a choice. People saying things like this is why it continues to be one of the most underdiagnosed and undertreated mental illnesses, and why people who struggle with the condition are afraid to seek help. But sure.
Let's call it a choice.
It's hard when the point of view of the first guy is so often what people act like. Good poem.

Life is not easy when we got suicidal thoughts...

I love how you wrote the poem but depression is it a choice. I know I don't want to die, but the scary thing is that I wouldn't know I killed my self because I couldn't control it. And I would never know I did it, because hi would be dead.
And my emotions change all the time almost instantly. It is a chemical imbalance.

They aren't saying it's a choice. The poem is from the point of view of someone who doesn't understand depression, apart from the last part in italics, which is from the point of view of the depressed person.

Should not be trusted around other people? Maybe you don't understand what depression is about, and why people hurt themselves, while in a depressive state. It's not about bringing abuse to someone else, but to ourselves. Yes, I placed myself there, since I suffer from it as well. But, I've never... never wanted to hurt someone else around me. That's not what this "mental illness" is about. Don't classify it with the likes of being "psychotic" or anything, that might cause someone to try to bring pain onto others. It's not. If anything, people being around us, it can help.

Why shouldn't people who are trying to get rid of their own pain be trusted around other people? a lot of the time self harm occurs because it helps lift the depression. Actually, it would be the endorphins that get released that help lift the depression.

The thing is, the two sides mean different things by word "depression". I think the biggest problem in this matter is just that, in everyday language the word "depression" has become a term not only for mental illness, but also a term for a certain mood for reasons like boredom, troubles, bad things happening etc., and an average person doesn't differentiate. I've experienced them both, and that's how I know the difference, or I might not have known either.
