Description Great taster session recently, Breeze Block Carving Workshop at Guildford Adult Learning Centre.

Took the day off work to give this a go 10:00am to 3:30pm and was well worth it. I was totally absorbed the whole day from start to finish. Very engrossing. Previously have done a bit of wood carving and clay.

The block was surprisingly easy to saw, chisel and file with metal tools.

I was particularly pleased that I managed a decent nose and it didn't drop off!

Tutor Malcolm West set up a great space for the six participants to work and let us create whatever we wanted and then gently guided us with tips and techniques.

These breeze blocks can be picked up from a builders yard. They don't weather well outside but can be treated with pva glue (I think) or you can coat them in plaster of Paris and then add fine detail.

It was a freeform session without references but faces that came to mind at different stages were The Argonath from Lord of the Rings, James Cosmo (Braveheart/Game Thrones) Jason Robards and especially Charles Darwin
