mahalos, brah.
so, did you get the symbolism? facing a cross in the window; baring hershelf before 3 beams of light for the trinity; the red cloth somewhat transparent, like in the wall in a confessional, between her and her confessor.

yes. when i got married, William, was in a little barrio up in the central mountains of Samar, which is in the Phillipines. after the ceremony, when we returned to the home (a simple nipa hut, really) of my wife's parents, there were an elderly couple there waiting to greet us. the old woman talked to my wife, whispering advice in her ear. the old man beckoned me, and whispered to me, "Always remember, she is just a woman."
some of the best advice i was ever given. mahalos, brah! Mak

yes, bayanihan is a tradition of the rural provinces. as more folks leave for the cities, however, it's probably becoming a thing of the past. when i was last there (over 15 years ago) my wife's barrio still didn't have electricity or a paved road. that's changed now. when we had our church wedding there, we fed the whole barrio for a week! if your interested, here's a link to a song ("Bayan 'ko"), by Freddie Aguilar, that's about this older way of life: [link] i don't know if it's so anymore, but at one time, Freddie A. was the most popular folks singer/songwriter of all time in the Phils. aloha, brah! Amazing. It's disappearing here too. You know, a lot of people in my part of the world are realizing that all this technology and 'civilization' has seriously negative side-effects. We would give up a lot of mod cons in order to live more simply... As for Freddie Aguilar, his song 'Anak' made quite an impression on me when I was little. I also remember the uprising against Marcos very well.

we were there during all that (the People's Power Revolution). interesting times. i'm surprised you've heard of Freddie Aguilar before. he was essentially unknown in the US, except for the Filipino community, even though he toured here.
