Description I dunno.

Edit : and no, i can't exactly say both because what this post mean is to "develop/change your artstyle".

Anime artstyles in general are distinct, they have parts on their body that are deemed unnatural on a real person like the body structure, hands, head shapes, etc. While many artists able to pull it off (having anime artstyle but godlike rendering nor vice versa), thats because they learned it the hard way first (aka, semi-realism).

"how come?"

You'd learn something like character volumes, values, color theory, and dimensions when you do start from the fundamentals. I tried to do both but even i'm confused on how even are my character's "shapes" nor "dimensions" are like. (Thus why the realism side looks crappy)

This is what this post mean't, i am torn whether i should stick to the old fundamentals so i can move forward or just stick to my current way of making art just because its something i already knew how to make.

I want to improve my work and change stuff a bit but at the same time, i don't want to waste much time.

Go realistic until you know enough to break away from it
Learn the rules then break them

You could always do both.

I have like 4 art styles now.

You can always experiment (from time to time or really intensely, up to you) and maybe you'll find something more or less equally as fun/comfortable than your current comfort zone. But no one said you have to only have one style.

but most anime is a fairly realistic drawing style

it's mostly children cartoons that are less realistic
Cartoon, moe, shojo, shonen

it also depends on the character and their role in the show

comic relief characters are usually more cartoonish or moe in design
