nope.. that's actually the shape of the formula interations..

I just use cilia and stripes of various directions to shade/decompose. Inner parts are colored with sfbm 2.

Thanks... interesting... Now that you mention Cilia.. that's what I think it is.... remimds me of a piece I did in Beta Testing the Mac Version of UF 5 called Uncharted Territory:  z00reka.deviantart.com/art/Unc…

I never did save the params and indeed very nearly binned this altogether... I zoomed out just before I did and there it was! I recall this piece as I think I used Dave Makin's extended cillia as one of the colourings....

Just had a peek at the layer and can see what you've done here.. nice! You have used the negative space to define linearity,,,

Consider... what you mentioned too... using just straight Cilia

Exactly! A neat trick I use with cilia is for edging.... by using a higher bailout than the formula settings, you trick the cilia into only coloring the bailout you want.. resulting in edges.

For instance:

this can be later used as a mask by making all of the color in the gradient window transparent....

from there, it's a matter of choosing the lighting style you enjoy and masking it out.. I often use opposing lighting schemes on the edge as on the inside to create the illusion of depth...

and I liked uncharted Territory.. definitely looks like cilia on a brot/julia..  could definitely replicate the look.. but the overall coloring is just great.
