Description Fourth of six drawings for kids at camp.

One of them really wanted a Grievous picture, and I accepted the challenge. Man, Grievous is a hard one to draw and get it right! I'm still not satisfied with the arms or the dark areas on the torso, but it's out of my hands, and the kid loved it anyway and wanted to frame it!

As with most of the pictures I drew this week this was based off a common publicity photo of the general, but Lucasfilm really picked all the best angles for these subjects.

You're right. Grievous is a tough one. You did a very good rendering this subject, Mill. I would encourage you to take the next step: ink. Maybe a little scarey, but not nearly as scarey as Grievous! *smile* I know you might not want to risk an already successful pencil drawing...but you really don't have to. Simply make a bunch or copies of the pencil piece and practice inking on THEM instead.

Well, I would, but this was a gift and it resides somewhere in the middle of eastern Kansas by now.

I have thought seriously about trying to ink my drawings in the future, though.

Definately consider stepping up to inking your pieces. I think, once you've developed the skill, you will be much more happy with the effectiveness of your images. As I said...by working on COPIES of your original pencilwork...there is no risk of ruining a drawing you spent alot of time working out in pencil form.

That's a good idea working on copies; that hadn't occurred to me. I might put some of my drawings on the copier and try that out. I've got a nice one of an A-wing that would probably look pretty good inked.

I recommend the use of a brush-pen. Takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it, but it's worth the effort. I only use drawing pens for detailing. The human eye likes to see variation. A line of varying weight is more interesting to look at. Brush lines provide that look. Plus...a brush-pen makes it easy to fill large black areas.

Thanks for the tip. I have a set of Faber Castell pens, and you can vary the output depending on how much pressure you put on the pen as you draw, but it's pretty subtle. I'll see if my local art store has any brush pens.

Aww! Yay for drawing for kids! I do that a lot at the hospital, and it's so nice to make their day. You did an awesome job with this!

Thanks! It is always cool to make a kid's day brighter by doing a little drawing for them. I always try to either carry drawing materials with me or make sure I can locate a pencil and paper if I know there will be kids around so I can draw something for them. Sometimes they don't appreciate it, but most of the time it really makes them feel special.

I do the same. It's nice to make them smile and feel special. Parents always laugh because I have a flock of kids around me. They worry at first because usually I'm at a hospital or clinic that they are bothering me, but once I assure them I'm happy to draw for the kids it makes them happy too.

Lol, same here. I've had plenty of parents apologizing for their kids "bothering" me, but I always tell them that I love making them smile, and if drawing Star Wars subjects or talking about it makes them happy, then I'm happy. I swear, everywhere I go, kids always come over and check out what I'm doing. It's gotten to the point where I prefer to carry my laptop around so I can show rather than tell what I do (quite a varied lineup of interests, really: drawing natch, painting, modeling, playing piano, and a bunch of other hobbies. The sheer variety is always guaranteed to get a "That's so cool!" from some kid, which always makes me smile).

I have started doing that with my iPad. Bit easier to carry vs a laptop but meets the same end. Yay for varried interests! I have quite an eclectic mix myself which helps in being able to chat with anyone young or old.

Lol, yeah I probably would if I had an iPad. They make great little portfolios, don't they?

I agree about the chat thing, though around here there are a lot of conservative farm folk who don't really "get" art or sci-fi, so unfortunately most of the better conversations I have are with kids. But hey, they're learning and becoming interested in things I like, and if I'm making more Star Wars and art fans, then that's just fine with me.

Oh yeah I'm in a small farm area too. The town has a population of less than 1000... And it's mostly mennonites... So suffice to say sci-fi doesn't go over well with the adults. Kids are far more interesting to talk to at times lol. My mom puts me in charge of shopping for my young cousins because I know what all the toys are. XD

And aye, iPads are great for on the go portfolio. I got mine last year and love it!

I hear ya.

Mennonites, eh? What part of the US are you from? I'm currently in the Air Capital of the world, Wichita KS.

I probably would have gotten an iPad by now if my paycheck weren't so lousy. I'm lucky I've got a secondhand computer to type this on.

I'd say Grievous turned out pretty well. I particularly like how you did his face and shaded the darker recesses.
