masking is an autistic defense mechanism, a way for some autistics to protect themselves from ableist induced attacks. it is a privilege to mask, as those who cannot mask are more vulnerable to hate and violence from neurotypicals. it is also exhausting for those who are able to mask.the good news is, it's not too late to unlearn masking.
