Beren couldn't bare the world until he saw her, 'singing' into the forrest. He called her Tinuviel, and feeling his Love, Luthien could never say no again.

She helped him retrieve one of the Silmarils, so that they could unite.

In the ''Fellowship of the Ring'' movie, Aragorn briefly talks about it (with Frodo).

Of course, the romance between Luthien and Beren resembles a lot to the one between Arwen and Aragorn (but the Arwen-Aragorn one happens many moons later, chronologically).
