Description
The sky is dark. There are few clouds, and the moon shines brightly.

Starring up at the sky is a Linoone. His name is Fries, and he’s been through a lot.

He was once a HM and pickup slave. Now, he is, as his trainer calls it, a bro.

”Hey Fries.”

Fries turned. Seeing who spoke, he smiled slightly. “Hi Salad.”

Salad walks up to Fries, and stands next to the Linoone, who had looked back at the sky.

”You’re thinking about them, aren’t you?” Salad asked after a few minutes.

Fries nodded. By “them”, Salad meant their fallen teammates. Fries had experienced more deaths than any other member of the team. All of them had experienced the death of at least two teammates, but Fries had seen ten.

”Who, exactly, are you thinking about?” The Bellossom asked, even though he already knew the answer.

Fries sighed. “Mostly Omlette, Taquito, and Frittata.”

Salad nodded. He thought so. Even though he had never Omlette, Fries and all the other Pokemon had spoken highly of her. Frittata was the leader of the team, and a big sister figure to everyone. And Taquito was a Magneton who was, well, just plain quirky. Both Taquito and Frittata had died against Wallace. After the battle, Fries had become depressed, and almost stopped eating. He got better after a while, but occasionally, he would sink back into his depression. “What about them are you thinking?”

Fries lay down, still looking up at the sky. “Well, for starters, I’m thinking about when I first met them.”

Salad sat down. “You met Frittata first, right? Back when she was still a Zubat?”

Fries nodded. “Yeah, we walked into the Granite Cave to look for Steven to deliver a letter to him, and she flew into Devin’s face.” Fries chuckled. “After a hassle, Devin managed to catch her, and soon after made her a part of the team.”

“And then a little while later, you met Omlette?”

“Right. She was relaxing in the sun, when Pizza jumped her, and then battled Omlette. At first, I think Devin was planning on taking Omlette down for training, but then decided to give her a chance.”

“And several badges later, you met Taquito. How did you meet him?”

”There was an electrical problem at New Mauville. We were asked to see if we could check it out, and it turned out to be Taquito, trying to play a prank. Devin had Pizza battle him, and Pizza, acting like the mother figure she is, scolded him as she pounded him. Devin then caught Taquito, and he became an awesome teammate.”

Salad nodded. ”What else are you thinking about?”

Fries sighed again. He lay down, resting his head on his paws. ”That impossible battle that Omlette had with Watson’s Magneton.”

Salad tilted his head to the side. “What exactly happened in that battle? No one ever talks about it.”

Fries closed his eyes, fighting back a few tears. “Because that battle was the first time any of us had seen another team member die…”

Salad blinked. ”What?”

Fries took a shaky breath. “Devin was relying on his starter, Waffles, to take out Watson’s Magneton. But he got confused, and ended up killing himself. Devin was low on options, so Omlette jumped in. Somehow, she won. And then Sushi took on his Manectric. He managed to confuse and poison it, but died soon after. Omlette then came in and finished it off, though if it weren’t for Sushi’s poison I don’t know if she could have won.”

Salad sat back, slightly shocked. “I… I’m sorry, I didn’t kn-“

”It’s not your fault.” Fries interrupted. He opened his eyes, sat up, and looked over at Salad. ”No one told you, so how could you know?” Fries looked back at the sky. “None of us really talk about it. Too much pain is associated with that memory.”

Silence washed over them. Then, Salad spoke. “So, what else have you been thinking of?”

Fries looked down at the ground. “I’ve been thinking about Omlette’s death…”

Salad froze. Unlike the other story, Salad knew this one:

Devin decided to battle a trainer, a fisherman, for some training.

But it turned out that the fisherman had two Gyarados.

The first Gyarados went down pretty easily, but Omlette was pretty weakened from the fight.

The next Gyarados, even though confused, used Flail, sending Omlette flying into a rock wall.

She was killed on impact.

Salad had also heard that Fries had defeated the Gyarados. But there was one thing Salad didn’t know…

”Did you kill the Gyarados that killed her?” Salad wasn’t sure if he wanted to know the answer.

Fries closed his eyes and sighed. ”No,” He said. “Even though it deserved it, I don’t think Omlette would have been happy with me if I did kill it.”

Salad nodded, understanding perfectly what he meant.

Silence surrounded them again. It lasted for several minutes, before Salad broke it. “Are you still depressed about Frittata’s and Taquito’s deaths?”

Fries, who had been looking at the sky, now looked back at the male Bellossom. ”Yes. Frittata was one of my closest friends, and Taquito was a good Pokemon.” Fries lay down and covered his head with his paws, as if trying to hide from the memory. “And I still think that there’s something I could have done to save them…”

“Fries…” Salad walked over and gave the Linoone a hug, causing him to look up. ”It’s not your fault. It’s no one’s fault. They knew the risks, we all do. They’re deaths were not in vain.”

Fries stared at the Bellossom. Then, the tears he had been holding back came out in a rush. Fries began to sob, losing the last bit of his composure.

Salad hugged the Linoone as he continued to sob. Salad wasn’t worried about the fact that he had caused Fries to cry. In fact, one of the main reasons he had worried so much about the Linoone was that he didn’t let his emotions out, that he kept them bottled up.

But Salad knew that now that Fries was letting his emotions out, he would start to heal.

And maybe he would return to that gentle, cheerful Fries everyone knew and loved.
