Description Funny how the most of my creation are made when I have a very urgent work wich must be absolutely done for tomorow^^
For exemple, if I was someone serious, I will be doing my stage report. Instead of what, I colo an old drawing of mine: Brienne, from the great, great saga 'A song of Ice and Fire' ('Le trône de Fer' pour l'édition française).
Its not totaly finished, but I had the feeling that if I didn't post it on DA, I will continue to draw...and I reaaally must work on my report.

Personally, I think Brienne's features should be "coarser" and longer, and her jaw thicker. We know from her first encounter with Podrick that people "commonly" mistake her for a man even when she's not wearing armor or a helmet.

In Harrenhal, we learn that she has hands reminiscent of the Mountain's in (relative) size, a "thick muscular chest", and "thicker shoulders... and a bigger neck" than most men--Jaime himself states as much in that chapter, and later in AFFC Brienne states that her size and build is comparable to that of a "big man".

Big muscular men have taller, more sloping traps (the hummocks of muscle between the neck and shoulders), shoulders that span 3.5 heads wide, and wider chests. If nothing else, her feat of shoving a "cow-sized boulder" (which probably weighed 2000 lbs) over a cliffside, and the fact that she naturally developed a "thick muscular chest" at age 19-20 makes it clear that her proportions and build are not normal (or even physically possible) for a woman. She's a freak of nature.

Personally, I see her being built like Primo Carnera (a 6'6" 265 lb boxer from the 1920's); he has a "thick muscular chest", "big hands", "[thick] shoulders" and a lean, uniformly-developed musculature like Brienne. He even has a "horsey" "coarse" face and large eyes like her, he just lacks her pallet, freckles, and broken nose and teeth.

I guess...Like I said, I really have difficulties to compute with Mr Martin descriptions, and my feelings on Brienne. On one hand, she's, like you said, an anomaly. Too big, too muscular, too masculine. And on the other, when you read from her point of view...she's, undoubtly, a young, romantic woman. Who can kick your ass and looks like a tank. And knows it. And suffer from it. And is proud of it too.

In short, a well thought and interresting character, a tortured soul who makes mistakes but is so full of ideals and purity...and well...the more I readed, the more beautifull she became in my mind.

So, this (old) drawing was my tentative to compromise between Mr Martin descriptions, and my feelings. I wanted to show how she felt more out of place in a dress than in an armour.

I must say I didn't read after Brienne was sentenced to death by a recently deceased someone, so...I guess she evolved more since...

Anyway, thanks for your comment ! i totally agree that this drawing is full of anatomy errors on the muscles, as I worked with no references when I scketched, and then didn't care to check it when I colored it, so...yes, not good...

If anything, her build is the very reason she's uncomfortable in dresses, not necessarily her face. (Honestly, I've got a similar thing going on with Brienne's appearance in my sketch art--only she ends up looking like a hunky model with crooked teeth.) I guess the more you love a character, the more you edit out their flaws, physical or otherwise. Which isn't a bad thing, unless your going for book-accurate art. It just goes to show what a great character she is.

As for her descriptions, I literally had to use the search bar on my kindle book to find the more specific ones. Details on her actual physique are pretty one-shot, so if you don't pay attention, it's very easy to gloss over them as you read. That's why I compile character descriptions and read them out-of-context if I'm doing a book-accurate drawing.

May I ask what app/program you did this piece with? I'm hoping to clean up my own sketch book into something more professional-looking.

Thanks so much for the reply! I hope to see more of your artwork soon!

Well I used an old version of photoshop (CS4 if my memory is correct). Absolutely enough for what I did with it. I picked here and here and learned what i could...and a professional would certainly do it better and in half the time^^
Well, it certainly open your mind when you learn about layers for the first time^^ To be able to add something, remove it, try with it again, modify it, without touching at the previous work, and always be able to get back when you don't like something...it's great!
You just have to save often. Never forget that.

To be honest, I don't draw anymore...well, sometimes I scketche when I've got the time, but life drove me in another direction. But your comment put a smile on my face, so thank you! And good luck with your drawings !

Beautiful artwork. How did you get so much heartbreaking emotion into her eyes?! It makes me tear up when I look into them for too long. She's so emotionally wounded in the books. I love the subtle attention to detail: the broken nose, the shape of her scar (it really looks like a horrible mouth), the light dusting of freckles... just gorgeous. You say it's not even done! I'm amazed! I love this. <3 Beautiful portrait of one of my fave characters.

Thank you very much ! Brienne is one of my favourites too. She's a pure maiden in a tank's body, and she must make her way through so much hardship ! G.R. Martin isn't very nice with her (well, with a lot of his characters, in fact^^). She's difficult to picture: I can't help myself to make her prettier chapter by chapter...until G.R. Martin reminds me of her nose, scar and everything...But admitting she has beautiful blue eyes, at least. That's why I needed to draw her once for all, and I focused on the eyes. Its a rare character: someone who knows she will never be at her place: too strong and big for a homewife, not enough for a "perfect knight", and after her previous haardship, I'm not sure she'll be able to trust a man . She knows what she is, and she deal with it without complaining, and it's trully admirable.

Wow, I wrote a lot, sorry for the ranting, and thanks again for the nice comment !

No I enjoyed your ramble. That's a beautiful description of her character. I found Brienne very difficult to imagine for the same reason. Her inner beauty is so at odds with her outward appearance. Once again, beautiful artwork.

This is simply gorgeous! How did you get so much heartbreaking emotion into her eyes?! This picture has so much subtle attention to detail. The light dusting of freckles, the shape of the scar on her cheek, the freckles! It's so, so lovely! Great job.

This is...pretty darn close to how I've always pictured Brienne, I must say. Her manly shoulders and pretty eyes make a really effective contrast.

Wow, thank you very much ! It's a hell hard to do a muscular woman (for me anyway)...next time I try, I better begin with some reference: here, I missed the anatomy T-T
Thanks anyway, I'm glad I was able to do something recognisable, at least^^
