Frankly, it was either him or Isabela as my love interest for my M/Hawke playthrough, and for some reason I don't like Isabela/male.
Also, Merrill does not exist.

Childish, stupid. She makes blood magic a joke.
When shes not whining, or being dumb, or attempting to be cute, shes talking about the plight of her people, whom she forced herself away from so that you could essentially be her bodyguard. If they made her have some semblance of intelligence, it wouldn't be so bad. I mean-- I get what they were trying to do with her, they just didn't do it well. I rarely enjoy elves.
The original Merrill from the Origins story was better. Her entire existence just feels like a pity party, and she's too dumb for me to care. I guess Fenris and Anders can be seen with those aspects, but I feel as if they actually have a reason to be pitied. But mostly its her making such a big joke out of blood magic. Bioware doesn't do a good job when it comes to Dalish women. Velanna was awful too. I don't really like the majority of the companions or npcs in DA:2, to be honest.
I'm sorry if she's a fave of yours and any of that offends you, but I suppose this is the point of making diverse characters.

Lol, I only like her because she's cute really. Her rivalry romance is much better than the default, friend romance. That's something I liked about her :>

That's understandable. When I watched my brother's playthrough, he did friendmance-- it seems like all of the rivalmances are better than the friendship path.
I tried Anders with friendship at first, but it's just so insanely, sugary-sweet that I had to restart and do it the rivalry way. Same with Fenris. I feel like they have more personality if they'll actually not agree with every little thing you say. A companion SHOULD have their own opinions. It feels like there's actually more meaning to their relationship too, if there's something they can argue about.
And as much as I adore Alec Newman's voice, Sebastian was probably the most boring character ever. At least his rivalry involved marriage, lol. But seriously!! I went through his friendship path and all I get is... A TOUCH ON THE SHOULDER?! This is where I need a renegade trigger. Fortunately, you can make him into more of a powerhouse than Hawke, so he's pretty useful.
As far as I've seen with Isabela, her rivalry path just makes her kinda'... catty and bitchy. Sort of like how she is with Aveline, but with more whining added to it. ["You're sooo boooooring, Hawke."] Dragon Age 2 has a few redeeming qualities to it, but it didn't really feel like Dragon Age. It felt like it was it could have just been its' own separate game.

I cannot stand Isabela no matter what path I choose >_< It feels like all she wants is just to have it out with you in bed, or hell, on the floor or anywhere else. Didn't feel much passion with her romance.

The only time I used her was to see her romance. Everyone compares her to Zevran, like she's the femme version of him, but I disagree. Zevran seems a much more interesting person, and there's at least more to him than surface. With Isabela, I feel like it's all just there in the open. She's incredibly transparent, and them tacking on the whole.. "Whore with the golden heart" thing to her persona, just... it doesn't sit well. None of the romances are very interesting. I usually don't care that much about romantic subplots, because I'm more interested in the story. Not everything needs romance. This is why Sebastian would be my ideal mate. He has a sexy scottish voice and no desire to be intimate. He can marry me and keep his chastity any day of the week.

When it's presented, I like to have a romance just because it could further the development of my character, but that depends on the options presented before me. Mass Effect was especially hard because, as a male shepard, I only had Ashley (an annoying racist who, honestly, had a cute voice) and Liara (the stuttering, shy scientist who did the whole mind melding "oh gosh, my head hurts, I need to go lay down" routine a little too much). As for Kaiden and female shepard....yeah Kaiden is just really boring. -_-;

When the option to get with Garrus came up, I was so happy. He was my favourite from the first, and he's such a good companion. The women LI's for ME don't exactly interest me either. I like Ashley when shes just being normal, but when she throws religion and racism at me I have no problem shooting her.
Kaidan eventually won me over, but not until the Citadel DLC for ME:3. When he makes Shep dinner, and it goes something like--
Shep: Are you gonna' make me some 'Canadian delicacy'?
Kaidan: We have beef... beer, and bacon. So yes. The foods of my people.
I think every Canadian who saw it had a bro-fist moment.

Liara actually became the best female romance for me, but only because she actually became a cold hearted bad ass who got shit done. That was the perfect match for my Shepard xD

I think if I were to M/Shep I'd choose Ashley or Tali. Tali and Ashley both seem like people I could at least be friends with in real life. I'd take EDI if I could. It took some time, but I actually like what they did to her now.
