I'm not sure how much you're commissioned for, but are you aware that the faces you give these sketches are all very similar to each other? It wouldn't hurt to put in a little more variety.

Faces are actually a very personal thing and a wise commission artist leaves them as subtle as possible. People create these characters with either a very distinctive face in mind (generally their own) or no face in mind at all.
In drawing the faces in a subtle manner (which does result in them all looking similar) the artist ensures that the audience can see what they like in it, or at the very least they have no created a face the character would never have.
Variety is always the spice of life, but (if the American consumerist society is any indicator) change is bad for business. (Yes I know this is very broad and not always the truth. But if you look at consumer surveys the trend is that the consumer trusts what they know and is unlikely to change, unless the product changes.)

I would have thought you'd ask the commissioner specifically what they want for the face, and then draw it.

Oh I'm sure if someone provided a reference Mint would (seems to do everything else very diligently, so I imagine he would) but most people don't think of it.

They're done my an amazing comic artist who does a massive commisionathlon (his word) each year and walks you through the process on each one. It's very fun and informative to watch. He teaches everything from basic to advanced techniques as well as just general bits of info on how to go from the description to the finished piece. Plus his cats always get in the way, it's funny!

Plus, the description seems to focus heavily on the character's personality, so I thought that would at least carry over to the expression on the face.

I think in some of the others it has, but in this case I don't know if drawing the character with her mouth open screaming would have been the best idea
