There were a lot of them, and not shy at all - they let people get about a meter away from them. It's because when people are there, the birds of prey don't attack them, so on the contrary of other birds, they learned that people = safety.

They're lucky! (I was in Britanny last year and they have a few puffins, too. Used to have a lot of them a century ago, but then puffin-shooting apparently became a tourist occupation and that almost killed the population. So for them, People =/= safety! )
