In our world, the Mongols twice tried to invade and conquer the Japanese Isles, only to suffer defeats which some at the time attributed to divine intervention (this being the origin of the word "神風" "kamikaze" - "divine wind").Here is a map born of speculation about what the world might have looked like in the early 1900s or so if the invasions had been more successful.
