Description It's dooooooone...

So, we have Martha Jones, the 10th Doctor, Captain Jack Harkness, and a slightly miffed Dalek.

I knew next to nothing about Dr. Who before this commission. All I knew was my da would watch it when we were kids, there was this blue box, and the main character had this obscenely long scarf that was a technicolor rainbow. Though I hated the colors, I loved the idea of having a scarf that long. I have since been schooled in my research for this piece.

It took forever to do mostly because I'm so dutiful in my research. I must have watched a dozen episodes from the 10th Doctor era and quite a few of Torchwood so I could get the 10th Doctor and Jack Harkness (the two required characters) to have the right essence. Once I understood that the Doctor's face was made of elastic rubber bands and that Jack was a walking case of sexual harassment, things went much smoother.

The actual commission, bless him, didn't want to interfere with the art process and only said "make sure it has the Doctor and Jack Harkness." A girl who was part of the conversation enthusiastically said "And Daleks!" It took me quite a while before I could settle on something, I vacillated between doing epic hero shot (which mean many sci-fi beasties I have no talent and doodling) or something much simpler.

I finally settled on this when the client said he wanted to bring home something to his wife that justified his "useless art" hobby. So, Mrs. Client, I say unto you it's not useless; it pays my bills! Since she thinks the Doctor and Jack are hawt (and realy, I agree) I tried to make them as sexy as I could.

The piece itself is actually quite a few layers. I was having such trouble - particularly with the Dalek and keep everyone in proportion to it that I had to draw each character separately and then resize them once they were all in one photoshop window. The Dalek came out crooked, and no amount of transforming could straighten him out. Martha's crooked, too, but for her you don't notice as much. Jack's head is waaaaay out of proportion to the rest of his body.

In spite of all the flaws, though, I like it. Martha looks very independent and competent - which rumor has she absolutely becomes in the continuity. And is it wrong that I love her shoes? The Doctor probably came out the best, though; it looks just like him and I take great entertainment out of the fact that he's perched so lazily over his hated nemesis and smirking in delight. The poor Dalek looks thrilled.

As always, let me know what you think!

As a Doctor Who fan, I really like this. You captured 10 really good. Even though Martha isn't my favorite companion (Donna FTW) but you drew her well.
Keep up the good work

Thanks for the comment!

I don't much about the series, and only saw a handful of episodes as I was doing research for the commission, so I can't say yea or nay on who my favorite companion is. I liked Martha better than Rose (who was always very angsty in the episodes I saw her in, and the romance drove me NUTS), but I never saw many Donna episodes, so meh.

Thanks again!

Oh Dr. Who. I cannot say anything about your drawing resembling anything from the show, as I have really only seen something like 3 episodes. That being said, I really like how Martha turned out. She definitely looks independent and competent and the Doctor looks very kind. In terms of body language and personality showing, Jack needs some work.

And for some nitpicking. Some of which you already mentioned, I agree with. Jack's face needs some proportion adjustment, what really sticks out is his eyes. Yes, the Dalek does lean a little to the left, but I only really noticed because you said something. Otherwise it isn't too bad. As for Martha, she may be crooked, but it isn't so bad that it can't be explained by posture.

Before I forget, I love the clothes on all of them. You did well on making folds and creases, though Jack's pant's zipper seems really long. Anyway, well done on this picture, and good luck to you on your other art endeavors!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I agree with just about everything you said in terms of Jack and the proportions. I'm glad you like Martha and the clothes overall - most people tell me I don't do enough with them, an that made me smile.

Ah the Doctor

One of the first things that jump out at me is the leaning. I know someone else mentioned that too.

I feel perspective wise that this seems a bit off in terms of the Doctor, and the Dalek sizing seems off as well.

You mentioned the proportion issues that I would have again addressed, but good to know that you are aware of them.

I feel like Jack's face is quite weird

Other than those little nagging details, it's a fun piece although I'm trying to understand where the rest of the doctor is because in this piece it seems quite odd in terms of placement.

Dr Who! With Jack! You just made my day!

The characters are very well realized. I love the way you drew them--each of their personalities really show. My only criticism is that everyone seems to be leaning to the left...

The client though their personalities really showed, too, even a friend took one look and said "OMG it's the Doctoooor!! <3"

You're right that everyone (but Jack) is leaning to the left. I tried fixing that in photoshop but to no avail, showing that I still have a lot to learn.

But thanks for the feedback and the fave! I deeply appreciate it!

Wonderful work! I only watched Dr. Who once or twice, but did a great job on the characters I think.
