Speedpaint here

WOW this episode. For someone who doesn't know anything about Thrawn this episode bent over backwards so show that he's a different kind of threat. I don't quite "get" it yet, but I more than sense there's a deeper game here.

And, ignoring Thrawn, HERA. It never even occured to me that there would be a governor's mansion on Ryloth that she would live in, but once the Rebels Recon brought it up it seemed so obvious. She went through a lot this episode, and it was nice to see her outside of the Ghost. With Kanan no longer an (obvious) powerhouse and Ezra taking the lead, she's of course going to be out in the field more, and I like that she actually took the time to do something selfish. For two seasons she was all "rebellion first", and it was nice to see that even she would have a priority higher than The Cause when push came to shove.

The entire episode was really dense with images that said a lot, I finally settled on this moment - and then failed to bring it about successfully.

This is a textbook example of not putting in enough work in the front end and paying for it in the back end. The speedpaint will show that I have a lot of sketchy work, but because I didn't have a clear framing at first I bump around until I find something that works. That isn't bad, per se, a lot of great paintings, even mine, come from messing around - but I didn't take the time to fix the proportion mistakes and staging issues before I started actually putting color to canvass. The price is that I spend A LOT OF TIME trying to fix these mistakes as I went instead of doing them first.

The end result is that I just ran out of time, and some mistakes require almost redoing the piece to fix the problems. The proportion of Hera's head, Thrawn, Ezra's hand, and the general stiffness of everyone are just the start, the wall window could never be made to look adequate, the details of the room are minimal to the point of missing, etc etc etc.

The sad fact is I ran out of time. I only have a week to churn these out - WHILE TEACHING, and at the height of autumn with leaves and lawnwork and the ever present of the fallout of Da's passing that continues to crop up and force us to make decisions we're not quite ready for. It's not an excuse, I wanted the painting for this episode to be great very badly, but I've spent this week fighting other battles. It's time like this when I wonder if I'll actually make my challenge to myself to do a painting a week for this show. We'll see.

What I like: the idea of the piece, Ezra's stormtrooper armor (I've never done it before...!), Hera's and Thrawn's eyes.

What I don't like: all the proportion problems, the lack of details, a lot of little mistakes.

As always, let me know what you think!

This is a scene from a Star Wars Rebels episode (season 3). Ezra and Hera sneak into her old family compound but are captured by Grand Admiral Thrawn, who is silhouetted in back.
