Commentary:

There is a lot of debate about the Starbucks barista posting online. While even I bristled a bit (I routinely work 10-12 hours days, and often work 7 days a week), we must be mindful of people's feelings. This young man was failed by our society in many ways. And instead of attacking, we need to identify ways to help and fix a very broken system.

As for the animals, I have recently become a Flexitarian. Basically, a part-time vegan. Modelled after Arnold Schwarzenegger 80/20 lifestyle. I will say, I love the vegan lifestyle, but I do not do it because I feel eating meat and cheese is wrong. What is wrong is the inhumane manner in which animals are treated. There are humane ways to process animal products. Kosher practices. But here is the thing, the food processing industry is not only failing animal. I work with many immigrants (mostly Africans) who come to America to work for "big meat," because Americans do not want to slaughter animals. These people are forced to work 10 hour days, 6-7 days a week, and are routinely fired for taking days off for medical appointments and illness. One woman I talked to was laid off because she had recently given birth, came back after only 3 weeks, and then had to come in late a few hours because her baby needed to go to the doctor. Every living being, animal and person, deserves to be treated fairly. This is not about shirking hard work. Granted Gen Z probably couldn't handle storming the beaches of Normandy. But I know many young people who work their asses off, for a generation above them that is not grateful.

Things need to change. It is not enough to advocate for animal rights when there are children that are starving, and vice-versa. It must be a well-rounded effort. And it is possible.
