Description

Day 66:

"DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!"

The Charge of the Rohirrim at the Pelennor Fields was always my favorite part of the Lord of the Rings, both books and movies. Besides it being such an awe inspiring scene, signaling the turn of the battle of Minas Tirith, it is also the culmination of a series of events that define the culture of Rohirrim as Tolkien described them. They are always written of in ways reminiscent of the old norse sagas, with characters and events far larger than life. When we meet them in the books however, we see them brought low by the scheming of Sauroman, the betrayal of Wormtongue, and they seem far lesser than their forebearers, never being able to live up to the heights of their fathers. There seems to be an unbridgable divide between their reality and the ideal they so desperately want to achieve. However, when they are thrown into the turmoil of the War of the Ring, they find themselves equal to great deeds and valor, and in the end prove themselves worthy of their heritage.

After Theoden falls, and the Witch King is slain, Eomer finds his King dead, and Eowyn also seeming to have been felled on the field of battle and he is so distraught that he gives himself to grief and madness and takes the entire army against the hordes of Mordor in what can either be described as a suicidal attack, or as in the words of the late King "In making an end worthy of remembering". This is my attempt at capturing that moment.

With so many wonderful scenes in the lord of the rings, it is impossible to decide on a favorite. The scene at Pelennor is certainly deserving of such high praise, and I feel you have done an excellent job in capturing it. Awesome work, congratulations on the DD.

It's great that you have put this at the moment of sunrise and emphasize the dark sent from Mordor just beginning to break up, just as it is in the book. Dynamic and very well done.

First of all, the perspective is amazing. Even though I'm viewing this on my computer screen, I can't help but feel I could reach out to the left of the artwork, and stop the orc with a few swings of a blade. I also like how the fearful expression on the horse only magnifies the bravery of Eomer, nevertheless the horse listens to his rider's command and charges forward. The color of the sky (can't tell if it's sunset or sunrise) amplifies the blood and bravery of battle. I agree that the rise of Rohan begins when Theoden choosesΒ  to aid Gondor. All in all, this piece is simply stunning. Keep up the good work! Β

Well said, and extremely well-interpreted original Tolkien ideas in your work. That is precisely how I understood them to be also, as former viking warriors-like who have been knelled by treachery and deception, but who ultimately forge their way in battle to reclaim their ancestors' honor and in doing so claim a place in their version of Valhalla. Thank you so much for depicting this dream of theirs, and their resolution to accomplish it through any means necessary, in your art. It's great seeing this magnificent moment illustrated
