It's like a sequel / spin off. Think of her as a distant spiritual reincarnation of Yuriko. She is a new character but she has some emotional ties to the past. You probably haven't seen this anime, but it would be similar to the characters from City Hunter and Angel Heart. In Angel Heart, the main character has a heart transplant. The heart still has the spirit of the person it originally came from which effects the story. So it would sort of be like that, but with cyborg parts.

I was going for early 80's but the live action show it's based on is from the 70's so you're pretty spot on. I watched a lot of Macross this year so 80's mecha is on my mind.
