Pavo: “But I have yet to reach the climax. Don’t you want to hear the conclusion?”

Morpho: “Okay okay fine, just…leave out the icky details, alright?”

All five of us nestled around the campfire that night as we shared personal anecdotes to pass the time.

Darcie: “Well!? WELL?! Was the tumour mal-egg-nant or not? I HAVE TO KNOW NOW!”

Pavo: “It is pronounced ‘malignant’. Anyway, when he was anaesthetised-”

Morpho: “YOU KILLED HIM!?”

For a split second, I thought I ruptured my ear drum from his piercing squawk.

Pavo: “Anaesthetised, you dunce! Not euthanised! You’d do well not to mix up my terminology. As I was saying, when he was unconscious, we inspected the mass and after removing it, it turned out to be a lipoma; it was benign. He was discharged and went home the same day”.

Darcie: “Hmph, are you sure you aren’t making it this up? For all we know, you could have made it end happily to yourself feel better”.

Pavo: “I fail to see the appeal of discussing medical procedures outside of work. But as long as I don’t elude to their identity, I won’t be breaking ethics”.

Darcie: “Anyone else have a story?”

Morpho: “Oh I do!” ~

He shot me a devious look.
Don’t. You. Dare.

Morpho: “There was this one time when Hope fell down a well!” ~

Hope: “NOT THIS AGAIN!!!”

Darcie: “Pfft-”

Hope: “MORPHO!!!”

I let out an unholy shriek and blushed profusely. Darcie stifled fits of laughter.

Darcie: “YOU WHAT!?”

Hope: “It was Morpho’s fault! He knew I was skittish and took advantage when I was collecting water from the well!”

Morpho: “Now now fluff, deflecting the blame on to someone else is most unbecoming of you”. ~

Hope: “You watched Mom lecture me about making ‘responsible decisions’ for hours while you cackled manically from afar!”

Morpho: “Hmm…nope. Don’t remember. I was too busy cackling manically”. ~

I had crossed paths with the devil and his name was Morpho.

Morpho: “But I made it up to you in the end, didn’t I?” ~

Hope: “Scarecrow duty for a week. You chased after crows while wearing a pumpkin on your head”.

Morpho: “And that’s how my dream of becoming an urban legend came true! It even reached the Chief!”

Pavo: Impossible! The Chief can never be fooled by such a thing!”

Darcie: “Why…WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THIS!?”

Morpho: “This happened years before you came to Home Village. Speaking of which… what were you up to back then? You must have had plenty of adventures of your own! Any close calls?! Daring rescues?!”

Pavo: “I wouldn’t be opposed to hearing another narrative”.

Darcie: “I-I’ll pass! I don’t know any good ones”.

Darcie was the toughest peryton I knew and I assumed she would have no problem letting us in on a story or two. But the look of deep somber in her eyes spoke more than words could. I guess that was a tale for another day. What I wish I knew then, was how warranted the pain in Darcie’s eyes was.
