Description Our five lovely little Brahma chicks at my grandmother's. They are such darling little creatures! X3

All of them are named after characters from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

The two chicks with the spots on their faces are Jane and Elizabeth (affectionately called Lizzy).
The two chicks that are yellow in color are Georgiana and Lydia (for those who know of Pride and Prejudice,Lydia lives up to her name btw! XD; )
And the little brownish colored chick is my favorite. She is sweet little Kitty. She had a sister named Mary that also looked just like her, but sadly, she passed away. Sleep well little Mary. Your life was so short, but you touched my heart nevertheless.

For the record, I would like it to be known that my grandmother has been raising chickens since before I was born. So she knows all there is to know about the upkeep it takes to own chickens.

Sadly, most people do not do their research and often buy these birds on a whim, in particular for Easter due to the commercialization of images of "spring time animals" such as bunnies, chicks, and ducklings. In the case of poultry like chicks and ducklings those purchased by haphazard owners die due to lack of proper lighting and warmth sustained within the first 24 to 48 hours of being purchased. Once those who survive are too big to be defined as cute or one discovers that chickens and/or ducks are more work than what they seem, they are often dumped (thinking that they will survive in the wild) and die from starvation, predation, or just death of cold. Those that are fortunate to end up in a shelter or rescue, are still not often given the proper care they need due to lack of knowledge from the organizations themselves. There are some rescue organizations out there that DO provide the proper care, but they are in scarcity. This is a similar and tragic case for bunnies and rabbits.

So please, do not take in these animals unless you do the proper research and preparation to care for them properly. For another illustration of such an educational point, please visit this link to a piece done by my friend, *sassawj in regard to bunnies and rabbits.

Here is also a source for how to properly care for chickens.

Petfinder is also another place to look for rescue chickens and rescue organizations that specialize in caring for these special birds.

I had a chick once, she grew up to be a giant white hen x3 Unfortunately, she passed away a few years after I got her during one particularly hot summer T.T

But I get what you're saying. I remember buying my first baby pekin duck from the petstore by my house. It was a lot of work. He'd peep all night when he was alone, so I'd have to keep his cage near my bed or stick a stuffed animal in the cage for him to cuddle up to. He'd also spill his water and food bowls all the time, which made such a mess >.<

And it just got worse when he grew up, since the plastic pool we used for him would get dirty almost every day and had to be dumped and filled back up, which wasn't easy. It smelled horrible and was really heavy. And the smell clung to you even after you've scrubbed yourself Dx And he got AGGRESSIVE. He'd chase my grandmother around and peck her legs constantly.

Then when he learned that crossing the road = corn in the harvested field, I had to worry about him getting hit by a car, which eventually did happen e.e Which pretty much broke my heart because I'd had him for at least four years Dx

I wish people who buy those cute little duckies would do some research into how much work ducks and chicks can be before they buy them :'D I'm just glad I lived in the country and was ABLE to take care of him

Wow, sorry for the wall of text

I am sorry for your losses. My sincerest condolences go to you. I am also glad to see another person who agrees that people should research before purchasing poultry. Thank you for sharing your story. We live in the country as well so I definitely identify with what you were going through.
