Will this sealant be waterproof?

I've been using water and glue as a sealant for quite a while, but I mostly winged the ratio in most cases. Then I found this and the 2:1 proportion really helps! Thanks

Step 5. Sealing it. Does that also protect the foam from the nicks, scratches and dents it so easily obtains?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

CelestialMelodia In reply to Kokushibyu [2013-11-28 03:43:46 +0000 UTC]

It's still foam so i high impact will still probably nick it. But I've heard that it's sturdier than it looks and really good for convention wear. BTW I'm lovin' your icon.

Kokushibyu In reply to CelestialMelodia [2013-11-29 19:34:12 +0000 UTC]

Awesome. I hope so~! :3 I'm not going to have a full suit thing of foam armor stuff. Mostly just pieces, so that'll probably also make me feel better about it getting scratched and whatnots.
And thank you~! x3

MissCordie In reply to Kokushibyu [2013-10-15 14:51:24 +0000 UTC]

It protects it somewhat, especially the more layers you put onto it because as the glue hardens so will the foam.

Any suggestions/products for giving it a metallic-looking finish?

This tutorial is awesome!! Just wondering what kindof glue did you use? I tried doing hot glue on craft foam but it falls apart QnQ

Wow, this is amazing, I've been looking for a way to make larger pieces of armor as well! Would this technique work for like a chest piece and shoulders, or leg armor?

Azurimi [2013-03-29 15:02:57 +0000 UTC]

I have a question: how thick is your foam, mine keeps flopping over and doesn't keep it's shape! D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissCordie In reply to Azurimi [2013-03-31 14:16:37 +0000 UTC]

Just the standard thickness, it's not very thick at all. Are you holding it until it cools? The sealant also helps harden it considerably.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Azurimi In reply to MissCordie [2013-03-31 18:07:52 +0000 UTC]

Ah okay, I'll try holding it down till it isn't warm anymore! Thanks! ^^

Wow this is awesome thank you so much for making this. Btw I was curious for the example piece you used for this tutorial what method did you do to keep it on your bicep?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissCordie In reply to Zen-Cosplay [2012-12-11 01:15:57 +0000 UTC]

It's attached to an elastic band on the inside, pretty simple actually!

HimeHeishi [2012-11-24 22:31:45 +0000 UTC]

Did you make it smooth using the heat gun? Or are you just incredibly good and talented at that? 8I

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissCordie In reply to HimeHeishi [2012-12-11 01:16:41 +0000 UTC]

It was smoothed using the combination of the heat gun and then careful hand molding so I wouldn't have any bumps. Also, the smaller the pieces you work with, the easier it is to keep it smooth!

this looks awesome! what kind of gloss did u use for the pieces?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissCordie In reply to Sora12Hearts [2012-12-11 01:17:16 +0000 UTC]

Just your standard brush on gloss you can get at any arts and crafts store. Mine was a Liquitex medium gloss I believe.

what do you mean by 2:1?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissCordie In reply to Wicked-MSTH [2012-10-04 22:54:17 +0000 UTC]

A two to one ratio. Two parts glue for every one part water!

Photoshop CS4! It took a while to do but that's the best I've found so far :/

ooo thanks, I ended up trying SAI and GIMP but it was a nightmare, I ended up getting CS6 as a present and it's ridiculously easy on there.

Thanks! This is helpful! The armor for the cosplay I'm working on right now is a lot less intricate than what is pictured (all I need is simple elbow guards and paldrons)...I've been working on the elboy guards, and what I did is seal them and coat them with fabrick. By any chance do yuo know if I should use acrylic paint or puff paint for the most realistic finish, or am I doing it wrong alltogether?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissCordie In reply to vitaminanime [2012-10-04 22:53:31 +0000 UTC]

I'd use acrylic for your base coat and if you need raised bits, go for the puff paint! I used acrylic for mine personally and it worked great!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vitaminanime In reply to MissCordie [2012-10-06 02:04:57 +0000 UTC]

I ended up using acrylic paint no puffpaint necessary and I got lots of compliments on the armor

AydenGracePhoto [2012-06-16 23:34:14 +0000 UTC]

When you mean a "sealant" Are you referring to something like Fiberglass Resin? Or Gesso? Both?

Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

MissCordie In reply to AydenGracePhoto [2012-10-04 22:52:02 +0000 UTC]

Apologies for the late response, but typically anything that will close up the pores of the foam, be it glue, gesso, or whatever really should work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

MissCordie In reply to AydenGracePhoto [2012-07-03 10:57:37 +0000 UTC]

Both of those could, in theory, work for something like this (I've never used them with craft foam though, so I couldn't say for certain). However, I use a mixture of Elmer's glue and water to simply fill in the pores of the foam, but still retain the shape and thinness of the original foam. Basically it's just smoothing it out, without compromising the shape or thickness of the foam.
