This is where I'm going to get really dorky for a moment, okay? Okay.
When explaining a peculiarity or a case to his companion, one of Sherlock's most famous catchphrases is "Elementary, my dear Watson". This phrase has followed Holmes through so many of his incarnations. In fact, there's an American show with a female Watson airing at the moment; it's called "Elementary".
But Holmes never actually said this in any of Conan Doyle's works. The quotation actually is:
“I see that you are professionally rather busy just now,” said he, glancing very keenly across at me.
“Yes, I’ve had a busy day,” I answered. “It may seem very foolish in your eyes,” I added, “but really I don’t know how you deduced it.”
Holmes chuckled to himself.
“I have the advantage of knowing your habits, my dear Watson,” said he. “When your round is a short one you walk, and when it is a long one you use a hansom. As I perceive that your boots, although used, are by no means dirty, I cannot doubt that you are at present busy enough to justify the hansom.”
“Excellent!” I cried.
“Elementary,” said he.
Does that help?

I did see a clip of some kind of show where this young male (was he black? I don't remember) and some woman were supposedly Holmes and Watson. I didn't quite like the idea, though, so I stopped the clip. THAT`S Elementary?!

I haven't given the show a proper look yet. It's Johnny Lee Miller as Holmes and Lucy Liu as (Joan) Watson.
Some people are put off by the idea of a lady doctor, but the reason I haven't watched any of it yet is because I am so incredibly in love with the BBC adaptation that I know I'll constantly be comparing the two. And that isn't necessarily fair, I know, but it really is setting myself up for disappointment.
