This tutorial was published in the first issue of Squish Magazine! [link]

This thing is HUGE!! Took me 3 days to put together - it consists of about everything I know about vectoring and the pen tool. Gosh I feel like I wrote a term paper. @__@

Please ask questions if you're confused! There is a ton of info!

Please DO NOT redistribute to any other sites.

Outline of info covered:

-What is a Vector
Difference between vectors and rasters
-What is a Vexel

-Intro to the vectoring tools in Photoshop
-Pen tool modes
Shape layers and Paths

-How to draw with the Pen tool
Edit: alt can also be pressed while you are dragging with the pen tool to change the angle of the unconnected handle bar all in one motion. (for when you are at step 3, so some may find step 5 an extra step, but for simple explaining purposes I'm keeping what I have)
-Editing the pen tool shape
-Editing relationships among multiple shapes in a single layer
-Layer Styles
Gradient overlays

-Vectoring lineart
-Vectoring shades (cell shading)
Edit: Some people use clipping masks, but I don't so I didn't mention them here. You can use whatever method makes shading easier for you.
-Troubleshooting tips
When curves aren't smooth
When curves are too sharp and jagged

-Applications of the Paths mode
Typing on paths
Stroking paths with brushes
Marquee selection from a path

-Vector Masking
Extracting Stock
Painting in vector masks

Edit2: Wow! Thanks so much for the DD!! :3

I just started to learn how to make vectors. this is a great source for me to go back to whenever I have trouble (plus the shading of the hair looks really hard)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MissNysha In reply to phoenolf [2012-01-05 07:47:05 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it. And the shading isn't really hard; just a bunch of layered colors basically.

can vectoring be used to restore the whole body of a picture? like this one [link]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MissNysha In reply to phoenolf [2012-01-05 16:17:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes, though reconstructing her legs requires drawing skill, but yes, vectoring is just another medium in art.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

phoenolf In reply to MissNysha [2012-01-05 20:17:02 +0000 UTC]

I could use a tablet then edit the lines

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MissNysha In reply to phoenolf [2012-01-07 11:42:36 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that's right. You can draw with the tablet/brush and then retrace what you drew with the pen tool to vector it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

phoenolf In reply to MissNysha [2012-01-08 10:20:25 +0000 UTC]

good to know because I am currently making a vector and the lower part of the character in the picture isn't there (maybe I'll link it if you are interested to know what I am talking about)

Very Nice Guide, Thank you for this awesome share, i have a question, Illustrator CS5 adds a new tool "width tool" which you can use too adjust stroke width at different points can this tool replace shape path line art ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MissNysha In reply to ArslanSSS [2011-10-24 04:27:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I've seen that - just got CS5 myself. I would say you can try out whatever works, but also that the most natural strokes look best (compared to auto generated ones).

Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful tips!! I like vectors, but I didn't know vector masks could be that useful

I'm more used to work in photoshop, though when working with vectors I have to use Illustrator for homework, and I kind of dislike that software

In the tut, however, I got the impression you were using both programs. Am I right? Or is it that I can follow these tips on Illustrator as well? o.o

Sorry if my english is kind of confusing ^^U

Thanks Againg for this tutorial

The techniques may be used in both illustrator and photoshop. However I prefer photoshop myslef. (most of the instructions on this guide were made in ps anyway, unless otherwise noted. The same tools/instructions I have for manipulating vector shapes are in both AI and ps). So if you need to vector something for homework, photoshop is perfectly fine. I made another tut specifically for vector masking in ps too.
