Description Uhm..the title describes the point of view of a little mouse looking up into those big yellow eyes and thinking "oh for chrissakes, i'm his dinner, and I left the bloody water tap running."

Or something like that.

Was taken in the camargue, its an 800km square area of preserved natural land. He gave me the creeps. Beautiful. But huge. And creepy. Very creepy. *shudder*

The title reminds me of a poem I had to study back in school - "Hawk Roosting" by Ted Hughes. There was a line that went "My manners are tearing off heads". Which, uh, seemed fitting for the description as the POV of the birdy. Well, it did when I looked at it. I'm not so sure now. But since I went to the hassle of looking it up, I'll post it anyway.
Nice photo, too.

Goodness, that is one gorgeous bird!
Lovely shot you took, too. I absolutely love birds of prey. They're such awesome creatures, and since I live in the middle of a city, I rarely ever see one.

I like how the tones on his facial feathers(?) seem to play along with the shadows in the background.

Great shot, colours are fantastic. The yellow in his eyes, crazy.

200mm? What lens did you use for this shot? If you don't mind me asking

this is your best shot, was it taken in the wild? Over expossed in the background though, but you can't help that.

misssakura In reply to Dyer-Consequences [2004-11-03 12:20:44 +0000 UTC]

I deliberately overexposed the background cus I found it ugly, so i'd rather have white. Was in the camargue reserve.

Dyer-Consequences In reply to misssakura [2004-11-04 06:58:12 +0000 UTC]

yeah the over expossed part in this photo doesn't look that bad. It just gives it more contrast and therefor makes the Bird stand out more. I'm just being picky. Did you take this pic in the wild?

No it was caged but not man handled....in this camargue wild reserve in france.

Wow, that's a great lose-up! And with 200mm!? I would assume that you could not get that close to a wild bird or did you...? Even though one of my friends did just that and took a great picture of a wild gyr falcon - [link] with his pocket camera some 3 m! from the bird... I had to satisfy to 15 m a few days later - [link]

The trick is to sneak through the bushes. You get lots of mosquito bites but its worth it. He was quite high up though. I got some of huge herons too, in flight, but they came out blurry unfortunately so i'll have to go back again. With mosquito repellant! I've never seen as many mosquitos in my life I swear....

Reqqu In reply to misssakura [2004-11-01 12:33:19 +0000 UTC]

So it was wild after all! I must say that was a hell of a picture of a wild bird with 200mm lens (mine was taken with ~750mm...) It must've felt quite safe up there since it didn't fly away. I think the best thing about animal photography is to get to the distance where you can have a good picture and be able to leave there without disturbing the animal

My experience on mosquito repellant is that a way better alternative is just enough clothes and a mosquito hat. While I was taking 'Resting for awhile' - [link] I had literally thousands of mosquitos buzzing around me and no repellant would've helped me there

misssakura In reply to Reqqu [2004-11-01 14:30:50 +0000 UTC]

wait wait wait, hold on I think I have the wrong end of the stick here...wild..he was in an aviary...but hes never been man handled..he was in a thin mesh aviary (which was a bit too small imo) but if he saw people he tried to fly away and hurt himself on the mesh..so you had to kind of creep up and not spook him out....

Reqqu In reply to misssakura [2004-11-02 07:15:27 +0000 UTC]

OK... So you are not as good in sneaking as the best of thieves Wouldn't it be great to get as close to a real wild bird... *dreaming*

I know the problem of temperature and mosquitos. It was only like 20 degrees when I took 'Resting fo awhile' but there were days when it was almost 30 degrees in shade and I had to be in the forest where all the mosquitos were. It was sweaty, but rather that then beeing sucked out of blood One day i took my glove out for like 10 seconds and there were 30 mosquitos only on the back of my hand and later that evening I counted mosquito bites from my hands which was nearly 100 / hand and I wore gloves when ever it was possible. Lapland can be a nice place in the summer... but it is still worthwhile to go there

We used to have a wild bird of prey that used to land in our garden, just by the Rubinia tree, he'd land with his (or her?) kill, and sit there (on the ground) eating it for about 2 hours, absolutely stunning, we live right in the centre of a town of about 250,000 people, and i'm right next to a lorry yard, and yet we have a badger, fox, and bird of prey. Awesome! Too bad I haven't seen it since, especially since I have my new camera...I scared it last time

Gorgeous shot, judging from the front this is definitately an Accipiter, which is the family of hawks, kites, and falcons. The light barring usually indicates either an immature specimen or a light morph. (morphs are birds that for various reasons change from the normal colour of their species, usually lighter or darker.) It's impossible to tell without being able to see the tail and wing shape, but I lean toward the kite family or the smaller hawks like the ferrangous hawk. Incredible shot though, you should submit it to the Hawk Conservation Institute or Audabon. Definitely a fave.

LOL Birding is one of my many obsessions and I particularly like hawks. *looks sad* We have a gorgeous Coopers Hawk nesting near our house. I have a sneaking suspicion he ate my chicken. I saw him take one of the doves at the bird feeder and that was where Chicken liked to go to eat the seed the birds knocked out.
