Description Once a week (ideally), I make a sofa to display on my blog [link] as a header. Sometimes, it's clever, and sometimes, it's dumb, but I enjoy it.

The past few sofas have been displaying some of my favorite books. This one showcases Once Upon A Marigold by Jean Ferris which is a very enjoyable book. It makes me smile.

I think that this is one of my best sofas ever. I tried a new coloring technique, and I like it a lot. (Drawn and colored in Corel Painter Classic)

Characters: Marigold and Christian (c) Jean Ferris
Title design (c) Harcourt, Inc.

wow i love this book! i like how you've made them look. although i see them a little bit differently in my head you did a great job. i also love ella enchanted. you should try reading just ella and princess academy

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissSmish In reply to imbannanas4you [2006-12-17 05:05:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes. This is not at all how I picture either of them, but I'm awful at drawing what I picture in my head. For starters, Marigold shouldn't be that princess-y so willingly.

I'm taking drawing classes next quarter.

And I've added Just Ella and Princess Academy to my list. Thanks for the recommendation!!

I loved(and still do love) that book. In fact, I just read it for a third tme last night. *scrathes head* No one has heard of it, and it's very much alike to Ella Enchanted, which everyone has heard of. What do you think of that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissSmish In reply to dawnmist [2006-12-08 20:59:47 +0000 UTC]

Definitely! I love Ella Enchanted, and I think anyone who enjoyed that book would enjoy this one too. I think it is a shame that this book is not as well known. I'm doing my part to spread the word.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dawnmist In reply to MissSmish [2006-12-08 22:42:29 +0000 UTC]

I almost liked this one better than Ella, for reasons unknown. Maybe because it was being told from a guys point of view... all of the fairytale books ae told from the princess's. (I am a girl, though, so it doesn't bug me that much. XD)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissSmish In reply to dawnmist [2006-12-08 23:01:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes. I liked that the story was as much about Christian (if not more) than about Marigold. So few fairytales have a balance like that. Christian was not just a faceless hero thrown into the story to save the princess.

I'm not sure which I like better. I read Ella a long time ago, and it has been solidly cemented into my mind as a favorite. However, I definitely would recommend Marigold to more people because it seems like it would appeal to a wider audience.

I could go on for days like this. But I won't. Thank you so much for your comments and literary conversation. I don't get enough of this.

dawnmist In reply to MissSmish [2006-12-09 00:09:04 +0000 UTC]

It bugs me when the stories do that. You get to know all about the princess, you get to love her as a character, than some weird guy comes and supposedly sweeps her off her feet and they live happily ever after. Cinderella is a prime example of this. We learn about Cinderella for the the whole book, then the Prince is introduced a few days before the ball. Cinderella goes to the ball, falls in love, and after the prince finds her, they get married. Now we thnk: "Hey! Our darling Cinderella is getting married to some strange guy who shehardly knows with an ugly haircut; what are we to do???" The same is with Snow White. The prince comes, kisses her awake, and whisks her off to the castle of dreams or some place like that. We didn't even get to know the prince! How to we know he's not some ugly monster in a princely halloween suit?
er, sorry for rambling. I got carried away.

You ought to draw and paint the sofa yourself, that way you dont have to rely on the stock anymore.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissSmish In reply to furryomnivore [2006-11-20 02:52:11 +0000 UTC]

But the sofa is sort of a gimmick. If I change it now, it won't have the same affect.

Besides, I've named her and grown attached.
