My technique? heh no one's ever asked before... well, I used Paint Tool Sai for this. I start out by sketching stuff in colours and if I really like what I'm doing, I make a new layer for lineart. In this case, the lineart is as sketchy as the original sketch. After the lines, I make a new layer and put it underneath everything else; for this one, I chose a colour for the background, one that'll convey the mood, and I go with that. Next, I make a bunch of layers to punch shadows and hightlights on - the highlight layer is under the lineart, but above all the other colour layers. Sometimes I make a separate layer for the base colour of the character, but here, I just wanted to make it fit the mood so I didn't give him a base colour.
