From what I've read in the TV Tropes page. The reason why the Hollow Knight became corrupted was due to his father not being ruthless enough. The king began taking a liking to the hollow knight and personally raised him to adulthood, which caused the knight to develop sapience and thus vulnerability to corruption. Which make this even sadder in a way.
He either stayed a heartless killing machine and died destroying the source of the corruption unmourned and unremembered, or develop feelings and self-awareness such as empathy and the ability to love but turn into a monster.

I prefer to think that not a single one of those Vessels, not even The Hollow Knight, was fit by the PK's standards.
I believe that all Vessels were flawed form the moment they were created. I read the dialog by a huge mushroom kin in the Fungal Core. They said that the Pale King's actions confused her, and that he was trying to prevent the inevitable. His proposed "solution" was still flawed, and therefore was not enough to contain the Infection.
Now why were they flawed? I think the answer is very simple; the Vessels are conscious. They aren't puppets, they can still process information by receiving signals through the five senses (might be 4 idk if they have tongues let alone mouths). How they react to it is completely varied, and will change overtime depending on any experience they may have in their lives. Just like any normal living creature.
Evidence? In the Birthplace cutscene, Ghost gains the attention of THK, and that causes THK to turn back and see Ghost. If they were mindless puppets, THK would have continued following the PK without question or delay. Yet, they took the time to take notice of Ghost. Simply put; The Hollow Knight senses Ghost, processes the information by thinking, and acted according to their own will.
What would have been a better solution? Spare every single one of the Vessels, and replace them when their resistance to the Infection wanes. That way, they don't have to place all of their trust on what could potentially be a flawed Vessel. It's like batteries, but with Void. When they lose power, you simply replace them.
Not the best solution, but definitely leagues better than mass genocide.

Void has a mind/will (dont remember which) so making a "pure" "Hollow" vessel is impossible.

That said, he shows signs of emotion early on.
The flashback you have in the Abyss of you climbing out shows the young Hollow Knight looking back at you...which is a small detail sure, but I feel like that was a very intentional detail to show he had feeling and was already doomed to fail from the start.

but she's the daughter of the Pale King, that much is for sure so that makes them siblings in a way
not to mention the ending where Hornet gets sealed inside the black egg with the knight is called "Sealed Siblings"
