"So, how do you like our new orbital weapons system, your highness? Special thanks to Princess Luna for lending us the use of her meteor spells. Now, projected and enhanced in magnitude by a spell-caster array, and improved in accuracy via a sophistocated sensor-suite and advanced microprocessors, our military satellite network can now allow us to strike any place, anywhere on the globe, all in a moment's notice.

Whether you need a surgical strike to take out a target with minimal collateral damage, or - as demonstrated in this field test - you wish to wipe entire grids off the map with saturation bombardment, this thing can provide. Project Skyfire will protect Equestria from it's enemies through deterrance with the threat of superior of firepower, or the application of it, should the need arises."

--- Royal Equestrian Air Force Commander to Princess Celestia, after an entire hive of Changeling raiders attacking frontier pony settlements is reduced to craters through the liberal use of the new Skyfire Orbital Weapons Platforms.

(Sorry for the MLP omake; can't resist)

"Like it? You expect me to LIKE something that lets you wipe out an entire city with the push of a button? That allows you to slaughter entire populations with fire from above, while not seeing ANY of the death and horror you're inflicting?

My little pony, how can you expect me to LIKE this travesty?

Luna and I have done many great things...many *terrible* things with our own powers before--you've heard the stories. But this...to rain down such power with no effort at all, just the flick of a switch...

When this project was commissioned, I thought it would be something to help keep Equestria safe, not cheapen killing and war to pushing a few buttons and wiping a 'grid' from the face of the planet! I thought this would protect our kingdom, not terrify others into submission with annihilation from the stars that they had no hope of defending against.

Equestria has been peaceful not only because of strength, Commander. She has been peaceful because both her rulers and their subjects know the price of war. Seven hundred years ago, we could have wiped the Griffons out, in vengeance for preying on ponies...but in the end peace was declared--neither they nor we could bare any more death and destruction.

Skyfire takes that away. It makes killing...no, mass slaughter, easy. It makes it simple. And it takes away what ponies have learned of the cost of war--that victory is paid for in blood by both sides.

I will not have my ponies turned into warmongers simply because war had become easy, due to some 'deterrent' floating over the heads of other kingdoms.

Tear that abomination out of orbit at once."

--- Princess Celestia, in response to the REAF General.

And if there's any lick of justice, that General and anypony else working on it is arrested, judged guilty for crimes against creaturekind and after being dragged through the remnants of the destroyed city (especially the schools and playgrounds), they can then be burned at the stake as the vermin-ridden, pastel-coloured pony filth they are.

Unlikely, though. This is pretty much Equestria's equivalent of the Manhatten Project--once the cat's out of the bag, she doesn't want to go back in.

The project may be out, but the ponies can still be punished. That will satisfy me enough.

...I take it you aren't a fan of Equestria's new WMD?

MagicMan001 In reply to SomeRandomMinion [2014-01-20 02:37:23 +0000 UTC]

The idea only reinforces my view of ponykind as unrespectable, molly-coddled, sniveling pussies too afraid to fight with their bare hooves and instead prefer to kill in mass so they can cower behind the safety of their desks. And naturally, I despise WMDs in general.

SomeRandomMinion In reply to MagicMan001 [2014-01-20 02:44:09 +0000 UTC]

Huh...I'm more of the "Skyfire will start a horrific arms race" view (as mentioned, it's pretty much the Manhattan Project on steroids).

I know what you mean and I agree with you that it will, but the idea the ponies would be the ones to start using it only goes to strengthen my growing negative view of them.

It's a new idea, going by the original omake--I don't think anycreature has really realized the implications of such a weapon yet; the idea of power of that magnitude is way outside of most species' contexts; not to mention the disinformation that's bound to be floating around on all sides. ("Duck and Cover", anyone?)

It's a brave new world.

[Ouch, nicely done! What a condemnation! Sadly, everything she said that makes the weapon system so twisted is pretty much the current evolution of warfare in real life]

(I suppose I should had written it as a 'Camp' or a 'Base' instead of a 'Hive' of Changeling raiders. Those Changelings being field-tested was supposed to be just a bunch of renegades, pirates, criminals and traffickers, a host of hostis sapientem generis)

MagicMan001 In reply to BrutalityInc [2014-01-19 22:36:07 +0000 UTC]

Maybe so, but that still doesn't give General Ripper and co. the right to take lives at such free well and on a whim, you know? I understand I'm probably sounding like the stereotypical bleeding heart liberal here.

BrutalityInc In reply to MagicMan001 [2014-01-19 22:45:57 +0000 UTC]

There is a base of Changelings renegades, who had been attacking Pony settlements in the frontier, that needs to be taken out. They have a new weapon that needs to be field-test. I rather think that's all there is to it.

MagicMan001 In reply to BrutalityInc [2014-01-19 22:50:55 +0000 UTC]

Then I guess I'm just a bleeding heart. As long as this death machine is then stopped, or tried to be stopped, then that's great.

[Well, that was kind of the idea....glad you liked it! I was worried Celly would come off as naive for a bit, that she didn't see the "value" of such a weapon.)

BrutalityInc In reply to SomeRandomMinion [2014-01-19 16:04:12 +0000 UTC]

[The real problem is, of course, she can't abandon the weapon system now that it is in orbit. No doubt other races such as the Griffons would want to put their own systems in orbit to use, and Queen Chrysalis in particular would have no reservations to use it on Equestria if she has her own system to give herself an edge over Equestria. Like it or not, Equestria needed the deterrence now, regardless of how evil it is]

It's under creative commons attribution license. You could use this as a sprite in a $50 game and I wouldn't mind. As long as you keep the "attribution" part.
