And pegasi can change their density - to a degree - so they can fly with that pathetic excuse for wings, walk on clouds and yet be able to survive hitting ground at supersonic speeds. The excess mass is probably partly transmuted to energy and partly reconstituted as water, carbon and nitrous oxide, hence Rainbow Dash's rainbow trail (and other pegasi smoke trails as well). The rest helps propel the pony in flight via coherent beam of subatomic particles aimed behind it. I wouldn't stand behind RD when she takes off - you can get serious radiation burns that way.
The only question is: how exactly does a pegasus regain the lost matter in matter of seconds?
Sunlight is not an option, since we've seen RD fly in the night and yet interact with other ponies.
Draining the energy/matter from the ground is non-option, since we see no plants wither and die under RD's hooves when she lands.
Perhaps direct storage of excess hydrogen and subsequent fusion?
